I only had a cold sore once but this worked for me. I dabbed a little bit of Alcohol Rub on the cold sore then used Carmex "For Cold Sures" which is about 1.99 at your local drug store.
Abreva is also known to work well.

Abreva DOES work, but it's expensive (I think I remember paying something like $16 for that very tiny tube at WalMart). The remedy my mother (and grandmother) used to use was Spirits of Camphor, which is available in any store/pharmacy, and is cheap. It stinks like hell and may sting a bit, but, it will dry up the cold sore very quickly. Try to keep the spot as dry as possible. Also, keep anything of yours that has touched the cold sore away from other people (like a washcloth or towel), and don't kiss anybody until the sore has dried up. Most cold sores are a form of Herpes Simplex, and are quite contagious.

Go buy some Lysine at the health food store. Take two 1,000 mg. pills three times a day. It will cut the time of healing considerably and take the pain away super quick. I've been doing this for more than 20 years and it works. After it goes away, take one 1,000 mg. pill every day to prevent future breakouts.

I know this might sound grose, but trust me it really works! When i was younger i had problems with cold sores due to upset stomach and an elder man told me to rub my own ear wax on the cold sore that it would dry it up fast! i still do this to this day and i rarely have one, maybe every couple of years. Good Luck!

abreva-you can get it at the drugstore
mind you it works best when you use it at first, like when you first feel it starting. But even after that it still dries it up in about 7 days
