My cocker trys to do the same thing; hers is caused by severe allergies; but some dogs have a pyscological problem that causes it.

My vet told me to give her some children's benadryl (since you have a cocker also I will tell you the dosage that was given mine; she said give her 1tsp. once in the morning and once at night).

Also you can give her either 1. HotSpot Medicine
2. A homemade mixture of Genetian Violet & Boric Acid placed on the skin.
3. You will need to put peroxide and first aid cream on the sores she has made; I tried bandaging but my cocker kept pulling the bandages off,
4. YOu can put a (i think they are called) Elizabethn Collar on her to keep her from being able to chew her feet; you can either get them at your vets office for around $15 or at a pet store.

Also I have found that giving a Brewer's Yeast Pill and Linoliec Acid from the pet section in Walmart works wonders!

It's most likely either an allergy or a thyroid imbalance (or a combination of the two). First try getting her a premium pet food without wheat. Nature's Recipe, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Evo.

Then take her to the vet and get a thyroid test done (simple blood test). Make sure you're using a high quality shampoo when you're grooming her, cheap products can sometimes make dogs itchy. As long as you're taking blood, it's worth the money to go ahead and do a full panel. This can reveal any serious underlying problems that may not be showing symptoms yet.

For sort term relief, you could put hydrocortisone cream on the spot. That will only work for a few hours though, you really need to find out what the real problem is.

Cocker spaniels are good dogs... But beware.. They are extremely hyper Make sure you have a lot of time an energy for this kind of dog.. Honestly they are loving and i LOVE dogs but this dog would not be on the top of my list.... And they tend to be very territorial... You have to train them when there young ESPECIALLY with children around

My dog does have allergies and licks and gnaws his paws as well, but the vet told me that even thought the allergies make the dog's paws itch, that when they constantly like, it creates a moist warm environment that yeast commonly grow in. He gave these anti-yeast/anti-bacteria wipes which help, but once the yeast set in benydryl won't help anymore. In addition, it may not be a food allergy. It could in the air. My dog is very allergic to mold and he started allergy shots last month...something else to look in to if it gets really bad..good luck

Cocker spaniels can suffer from hair knots inbetween their toes and will make them do this. I have no idea if this is in fact the problem. I'm assuming you take her to a groomer since she's a cocker...speak with them and also take her to your vet.

If this has been going on for sometime then it could very well be psychological. Obsession over something is a prime indicator of imbalance within dogs.

This happened to my pekingese and what i had to do was buy doggie lotion. Since it a small breed dog there belly rubs with the grass and this gives them a "breakout" or apperance of a rash. You can purchase it at a local pet store.

She could have allergies to grass seeds, or a skin condition, fleas. It is obviously causing her some distress. Take her to your vet he/she will recommend a course of treatment.
