i am running windows xp home edition, with no service packs installed yet. i'm about to install a new program that potentially could cause registry problems (or so the pop-up screen tells me) I'd like to know how to backup my registry first. i'd also like to know where exactly the complete registry file is kept, if anybody knows. thanks

Easy to do. Go to Start then Run and type in "regedit". When Regedit starts go to File then Export and type the name you want to call the backup and where you want it to go and then hit save. There you go.

go to start-accessories-system tools-create system restore point
That will back you up in case you do mess up your comp. You can also download Abexo Registry cleaner ( FREE) and it has an ooption to back up your registry. SImple interface too.

You can make a copy (kinda) using system restore.
