a) They think their occupation covers their lack of knowledge and b) haven't they always made it up as they went along? This is a great example of why I'm no longer affiliated with Christianity.

Well loony,
You may want to do a study on sin. Most Christian denominations teach that sin is in fact all the same. There's not scale.
Think about it. If sins are forgiven through grace and not good deeds, then they must all be equally bad, correct? Also, most believe that sin is anything that takes you away from God. Murder wouldn't necessarily take you farther away from God than say lying on a regular basis. Sin has more cumulative effect. The more you sin the more likely that you're disconnected from God.
You should study on your own. You should learn on your own. It is, however, a good idea to listen to what those who have already studied have to say. Maybe this priest wasn't the right guy for you. Maybe you need a different denomination.
Many denominations only have pastors. They present a weekly message/teaching and leave it up to you to look into it further or learn from it. I'm not trying to get you to change denominations, but you shouldn't give up on God because the one you've encountered is difficult in any way.
Not giving up on the opinion or experience of one event is a great attitude to start with. Don't give up on God, He never gives up on you.

It's actually a little more complicated then that. Are all sins the same? Of course not! There are definately differences in severity of sins, however the penalty is the same no matter how "big" or "small" the sin may be.
Matthew 5:21-28
Romans 6:23
And yes there are different points of view, but generally to be part of the clergy in a church like that you don't just jave to know the bible and what you believe it to mean, you actually have to research what the original text of the bible was, how/what/why it was translated to what it is now, the customs of the times/culture that are in the bible stories. It's more complex then just saying, well I know what I read and what I feel it means.

You are right that we should all follow our own conscience as we read the word of God, and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit, not just blindly accepting the word of any priest (and the Word also says that all who believe in Christ are priests...we are a "holy priesthood").
As for what that priest was referring to, He may have been referencing the verse that says that if you break a part of the law you have broken the entire law. But this isn't exactly to say that all sins are the same. In fact, the Word even tells us that sins against the Holy Spirit are unforgiveable, whereas all others are forgiveable, drawing some distinction here between more severe and less severe sins...

Hmmm. So you don't know much about Christianity? I need more to comment on this and so can only ask, -- 'you don't know much with respect to what?
Is there some other spiritual pathway that you do know considerably about? Yes you do, whether you realize this or not.
Christianity is just one path; there are others, as there are other planets, countless other souls and, thereto, untold numbers of other universes, each at least as viable as the next. And each has its holymen or holywomen, its respective saints, and god-realized beings, say... You see?
Now, observe, staying true to some respective scripture may be apt for a given geography, culture and time, but not apt come differences over the span of years or centuries or millenia; this, because sheer needs will have changed, or simply, the souls that abided some one scripture may have evolved well beyond this and have no need of its doctrines any longer. That is not sinful but rather, growth, or development, or ascension, or all.
While men and women may be dogmatic about life and spirituality, God is not. Therefore, go and expand yourself and horizons. You are never any closer to or farther from God than at the given moment and place where you are now standing or sitting.
Truth, like God, is ubiquitous, see?
Get not too indulged in this thing, sin. Reflect on it, yes, but don't indulge, for you -- like many others before you -- including priests and clergy, will lose sight of truths. Such as that is too high a tax to place on yourself or anyone.
All truly, in this world, is concerned with causation, or, say, causes and effects, though this may feel to you too dry an explanation or worse, an over-simplification. But it is true...
The 'priest' who speaks and acts from out of his own high sense of life, to which there exists a common thread to all, be they animal, plant, or mineral, and regardless of the religion -- and to which no one has cornered the market -- is the 'priest' and the priesthood that you should seek out and to whom you may wish to listen.
Priests are having to learn, too. Often they will have chosen this specific vocation because they innately feel they need to know things that others are quite on-point about already. Many priests need the experience of being the priests, see?
We do today live in a world which consists of the meta-religion, in which there, again, exists a common thread no matter who or what we are or where we live or what someone else or some other creed has admonished us to believe, or about which many dare to forewarn us with threats of so-called fire and brimstone.
Little could be farther from the truth.
These are not the ways of God -- ever...
I will leave off here for now...

He was right you have a lot to learn. To one who can only see perfection does not know the differance between a lie and a murder cuz to be perfect sin is not alowed to be thought. Why not try just for half an hour a day reading scripture and see what happens.

Technically a Priest is a functionary that is involved with Traditions of the Temple. They light candles, they say prayers, etc. etc.
Theologians are involved with the understanding of the Religion.
Not all Priests are Thelogians.
I don't pesonally think too many people on Earth understand Jesus.
Christianity, that's a cult pratised by Churches, Belief systems and their Functionary Priests.

To communicate in words what the Spirit is prompting in another human being is a task that would be impossible if it weren't for the grace of God.
Equal, NO; both requiring a sacrifice to cover, yes.
God provides the way back through the blood sacrifice of Jesus the anointed one. He is also your high-priest, your mediator. Pastors and teachers are sometimes anointed men of God, sent to help you along your path. Just test what they tell you with a knowledge of the scriptures.

Yes, you are mostly correct. The bible warns us of the false religions. It tell us to leave Babilonia while there is time. I have so much to say to you. Everything is backed up by the bible. I can help you! most of the priests' answers are phony because they dont know them. they are hypocrites. and the bible tells us that if we are in a religion like that, we should leave, because it is false. A lot of people say one thing and do another. for example: at my old church, my priest used to smoke, clearly being hipocritical. but ask yourself, what does the bible say about this? read psalms 19:7-10 please, i could explain so much more but i want to know if you actually listen and care, because i dont want to write and you not even listen. if you have another wuestion, email me at kclr16@yahoo.com
thanks

Actually all sin is equal in the eyes of God.
Think about it, if the wages of sin is death that means the wages for murder is the same as the wages for lieing.
A very easy way to reconcile this with the concept of morality is that all sin brakes down to disobedience.
Murder is a sin because God said not to do it, same with lieing and stealing, and all the other commands.

Hey Loony Liz, actually sin is weighed equal in God's eyes as seen in the scripture below.
James 2:10-11
For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder."[c] If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
