I kind of agree with chuck g (below) however, be very careful what you delete. when you type Start/Run/Msconfig - be very specific about what you don't want loading and then try booting your computer to make sure it will boot the way you want. You're better off "unclicking" each item one at a time - so you can see what your effect is. To say that those items aren't needed is not true.... as you'll find your AV there as well as a lot of thing running - so don't just unclick it all.

It depends what you mean..
items in the desk tray (lower left hand side, by the windows bar)
are booted automatically. you can however go into the control panel and or the C: and look for the StartUp folder. some programs are stored in there. deleteing those should stop that.
programs such as MS Word or your anti Virus software need to be uninstalled to stop them loading on boot up!

Go to the start menu and go to Run. Type in msconfig. From there you can set what programs startup when you start your computer. Click on the startup tab to the right. Click and choose what ones you dont need. You can remove them all, as none of them are necessary for windows to operate.

Oh by the way, this is for windows XP.

If its in the Startup folder (Start, All Programs, Startup) delete it. Or in the Run window (Start, Run) type msconfig And select the Startup tab, uncheck anything that you don't want to run at startup. Then all you have to do is click apply and restart your computer.

you must be specific on what you want to stop in starting up upon booting up, but for the benefit of the doubt, you can edit the start up programs by deleting shortcut here:

C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

and you can also modify the registry just type regedit.exe in the RUN command but be sure of what you have to modify or it will crash your system.

Make sure you have shut all your programmes down that you have been using. If that don't work go to your tool bar at the bottom of the screen and close them for there
