It depends on the area you live.

If the strays are threatening you or your family/pets/livestock than in most localities it is okay. Here where I live animal control half the time won't respond to calls and have told citizens to just shoot the dogs themselves (there are a lot of stray dogs that run in packs here).

If you are just wanting to shoot them for no reason other than the fact you don't like them; no it is NOT legal.

Basically you will have to check with your state laws; because if you do shoot one of the strays it could turn out to be someone's pet and then you would have a lawsuit on your hands.

No. I really hope you are not looking for a "yes" to this question so you can go shoot some strays. Shooting stray animals is CRUELTY! If you have a problem with strays in your neighborhood then call the humane society... you could also spread the word of the importance of spaying and neutering. By spaying and neutering your pets you cut down the mass numbers of pets being born everyday. One dog and her first litter over a seven year period can produce 300,000 plus other dogs. Scary right? The solution is not shooting them but educating the public.

Well if you were in immediate danger, probably.

Actually in my province they have designated days in the northern rural areas where you go out and shoot the strays. Though this is because there are like 10 people a year that are attacked by packs of ferral dogs up there. The people with dogs that they care for just make sure to leave them inside for the day.

Otherwise...no.

This is still cruel no matter if it is legal or not. How would you like it if they shot you cause you were homeless. Eventually the livestock will be killed anyway, just think of it as the dogs cutting costs.

No, it is not legal. Call the county dog catcher to come get them. That is cruel to shoot them.

Not in any jurisdiction that I know - and I'm a retired lawyer

It is a good way to get yourself arrested for animal cruelty.

Call the animal control officer

Depends on where you live. If you're a rancher in Colorado, yes (if you have a license for the gun). Check with your local police department.
