Let's say that he or she keeps on swearing at strangers in the street... would you spank them if nothing else works?

Have you tried Tabasco sauce? It works wonders for my little one! Now before anyone jumps my case, we have only had to actually do it 2 times, any other time all I have to say is Tabasco and she will stop being a turd, lol. And we also just put a TINY amount on her tongue, and I mean TINY! It doesn't take much and she absolutely HATES it!
Once she gets the point that she can't do naughty things we give her a piece of bread and some milk and some love. I don't think spanking does to much good, it just teaches them that it's okay to hit someone if they do something you don't like. I learned that when she would "spank" us, lol!

And by the way, my husbands friend had their children taken by the state for spanking the one child in a WalMart! Ridiculous!

Swearing at strangers at five years old?

That sounds extremely unusual. I would have the child checked out for psychological difficulties - maybe Tourettes?

I would not spank them.

I'd pop them on their butt first thing. I know a lot of people disagree with spanking their child, but the way I look at it is, there's a difference between whipping and spanking your child, and if I want to spank them, they're my kids!

Children learn what they live. How do you speak in your home and to your child? Sounds like the parents need s good spanking, not the kid!

Yep. I would also try refusing to talk to him or respond to him for a set amount of time. For example you could say, "Now John when we get in the store if you say any swear words Mommy is not going to talk to you or listen to you for 1 hour because Mommy doesn't like to communicate with someone who has a dirty mouth and neither does anyone else." Explain this includes him asking for a drink or snack or to play. That may work.

Well first off kids dont know any better...where did he pick this up at? I would spank him or her. Thats bad, and if he or she didnt stop, id put a tiny drop of dish soap in their mouth. Thats what i did when our son came homw using "idiot" i dont like those types of words and they are NOT allowed in our house, a 5 year old DOES know what you are saying, they just choose not to listen. I gave warnings and he didnt stop, so i pulled out a drop of dishsoap and it STOPPED right there and then. I do not tolerate that and no parent should!GOODLUCK!

My daughter eats soap when she calls names or swears. But keep in mind that it is an adults fault for not teaching what is apropriate first. I say all the words in the rainbow, but my kids know that they are not allowed to talk like that until they are 18.

Why is this child swearing first of all? Who is she around that swears like a sailor? If you are the one doing it, well, duhhhh...first clue would to be to stop swearing yourself. Next set consequences for her actions. I agree with the soap thing, a little liquid soap on the tongue goes a long way or as my mom used to do if we swore (which rarely happened) a dabble of tobasco sauce on the tongue! Like somebody else said, it's not cute.

if you are going to spank him for cussing make sure you follow through everytime..even at restaurants, parks, playgrounds, shopping malls....remember people can be nosy and if you are giving little jonny a smack on the butt for cussing, someone might turn on you!

So, i suggest a different plan..take toys away..each time he cusses, take a toy away and DON'T give it back until he stops cussing! Even at stores, let him know this is cuss word #5 and when you get home you are taking toys away, then do IT!
