Will it work as the new computer's operating system? Will Microsoft allow a re-installation on the same disk, but with what is otherwise a new computer?

If it is going to be used as the main hard drive, then no. There are missing drivers and such. You will need to re-install windows.

That is unless you are installing the hard drive on a computer with the same exact motherboard.

Unless the hardware (and I mean EVERYTHING -- processor, sound, video, USB controllers, etc.) is identical, it will not work.

I had this same situation -- my motherboard died, hard drive was fine. Bought a new motherboard (faster processor), it wouldn't boot. I made a bootable CD using a boot image from another XP computer, booted up via the CD, then re-installed XP from the hard drive. It worked fine, and everything is up and running now. It was my legal copy of XP, legally that's no problem.

I would say yes, if you do not have another hard drive in the computer with another operating system.

programs and such will work, however the p.c will view this as a slave device and make it a seperate drive. i.e (F:)

if however you want to use it as the main drive, it would need to be using the same operating system i.e XP which is stored in the RAM all the time!

nah it wont work unless its the exact same hardware configuration. And even then, it still might not work. You will have to re install the operating system.

You can try the hard disc in another PC as a slve drive. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

that depends if the other computer has the same motherboard as the one you took it out of chances are pretty good if it has the same brand chipset then you can run the repair/r and sometimes it will work but if its an entirely different chipset then no it wont work

The computer will attempt to load from the new harddrive. If the computers are the same, it should definitely work.

i don't think so.

your main drive (C) should still be the master drive that stores the OS (operating system).
