why do people feel the need to lie about something if it makes no difference to me either way?
I always assume people are as honest as me, but who can you really trust nowaday?

In a nutshell, no one. Not everyone is like you/i/others. We all have our own hidden agenda. Do I lie and say I don't have a bf because I like the extra attention or do i say I have a bf because I' just not interested in someone. Everyone has their own reasons, make it clear it doesn't bother you, see what they say.

People lie because sometimes, it is easier and or most probably they are ashamed of the relationship and they dont want you to think less of them.
However, when people tell you not to trust anyone, they havent thought the problem through. You cant not trust people. You will just have to be carefull who to trust.
The people who give you reasons not to trust them those you dont trust. The innocent ones those you trust.

I think you should repost and rephrase to your last point 'who can you really trust nowadays'
Why do people lie.... well I lied a bit when chatting to a couple of people, but when you start to become friends then you have to come clean.... personally I was never that comfortable with the lying bit, after all, if you can't be yourself on these types of forums, then what's the bloody point?

ppl lie becoz they want attention or they feel out. if ppl lie about not having a relationship, they are ashamed of the person or they want 2 keep it quiet 4 a while, 2 see if it works out. but sometimes ppl are just real sh*t heads and all they do is lie!

from what I know, if someone says "I'm in a relationship" when they are not, it usually mean that they are not interested in the person who asked them. If they say "'m not in a relationship" when they are, it usually means they are willing to cheat or just see how far the other person will go (usually the whole hog) on the subject, and basically "Bear trap" them, in other words, they are willing to string someone along for the fun of it (usually at the other persons' expense of looking like a fool)

if its some bloke u just met, they r keeping their options open by pretending to be single even if their not and crave love and affection from anything on 2legs.ppl who lie and say they r in a relationship when they not r in denial and dont want to seem single and desparate.besides blokes love girls that are unavailable,makes the chase so much more fun.

The life sucks. Not everybody are like that, but not too many good people left. I can't solved your problem for sure, because I have some little ones on my own. Good luck choosing the people.

When people lie about being in a relationship they either are trying to repel someone and/or theyfeel insecure about being single.
When people lie about not being in a relationship it is because they are attracted to someone and want them to think that they are single and/or they are embarrassed or unhappy in their current relationship.

I never understood that either. You just have to attempt to look into things more and ask more questions. Otherwise, you won't find out the answers.
