I have been treated with medications for Bipolar for over 20 years. Your doctor is a better source of information than anyone on Yahoo answers, because people who respond to your question are only sharing their own experience, or else some story from a friend of a friend. There are actually dozens of medications used as well as a huge number of combinations of medications. (I currently am doing well on a combination of 3 medications)

My advice - don't leave the man you're with for the reasons you give here. You need someone by your side. If he's willing to be part of your life, let him. A good doctor or therapist can help with some sort of education or counseling so you both can deal with this better.

My best wishes for you.

There are many different meds for bipolar. Lithium is the most likely to be prescribed for bipolar type 1. You could also be put on Lamictal (lamotrigine) or Depakote (valproate), although there are others.

I take lamotrigine and olanzapine (an antipsychotic) and have had very few side effects.

With the correct medication you can live a perfectly normal life. Don't leave your SO. If you were such a problem to him, he would have left you long ago. Your problem is a physical disease and can be treated, so don't beat yourself up over it.

First off, you need support. Come and join us over at http://z9.invisionfree.com/Bipolar_Haven where you will be made welcome. You can also look up the different treatment options and side effects at http://www.crazymeds.org but don't get too hung up on that stuff.

Hang on and get well. It will get better.

My doctor put me on lithium and I gained 35 pounds in a short period of time and it knocked out my thyroid so now I'm on Synthroid. The lithium was really helping but I'm not risking getting diabetes or health problems due to the weight gain. I don't know what to do either, so you are not alone.

Your depression and dysfunction has a source. You can try every drug in the book to mask the symptoms but you'll probably just develop some other psychosis. Your depression comes from your early childhood history. Something happened when you were very young. You received unempathic care from your mother or caregiver. This type of lack of care has an affect on all of us. To what extent is directly proportionate to your level of dysfunction. Some people drink, some take illegal drugs to mask their painful ingrained memories. We are electrochemical beings and these things are burned within the synopsizes of our brain. Therapy and introspection is your only answer or you will suffer a lifetime of dependency on one drug or another. You must learn about yourself before you can have a healthy relationship with another. How can you truly "LOVE" your man if you hate yourself? It's impossible. Get to know yourself.
