Kinda cool when that happens, but that's beside the point. My question is this; I just read another question which implied that somebody with a lengthy list of best answers was somehow making this happen using two different user names. Now, I'm curious(also, bored. I really should go to the gym or something) So for example could I ask a question, log on as a different user, answer my own question and then vote this answer as best . Do people really do this, and why?

Who knows?
I have thought about doing that as well; How come I don't ever get a best answer?
Whats so much better about their answers than mine?
It makes me feel inferior!

I suppose people do that. I think the whole "point" thing panders to silly aspects of our personality, especially an infantile and unquenchable thirst for approval at almost any cost.
I have also figured out (anecdotally, not scientifically) that some of the high point-getters use a very simple strategy. They answer in the way they expect the asker to be most sympathetic to. This works because most people only want to hear what they agree with. On examination you'll find an incredible number of downright kiss-up banalities getting "best answer" status.
Personally I find the e-mail give-and-take I get from co-answerers to be much more stimulating than the original question.
Suggestion? Get rid of the point system!

I'm sure thare are people who do cheat like this, but there are people who cheat no matter what the subject. its caused by low moral standards. And then there is the Indian guy who comes on and asks dozens ofquestionsabout hindulsm, and reports anyone who doesn't give him the answer he wants, or suggests he might findthe answers quicker if he lookedthem up. turns out he is gettingpaid by some Indian corporation to do it. yet another way to cheat.

Probably. No matter what you get into, there's always somebody who will be there to abuse it. I suppose it's human nature.
That would be a quick way of racking up the points, but what's the payoff? There's no reward other than the higher level, and what's that really worth?

Yes, some people are so pathetic as to create numerous accounts so that they can give themselves the "best answer." I don't see why though since it's not like the points actually mean anything. Nothing is gained from it, no money, no prizes... nothing.
Weirdos.

I guess that you probably could. As for why people would do that: The answer is that they are complete losers who need to find something to actually DO!

i think that this whole point thing is stupid i mean do you really get anything special for having the most points
the people who do that have way too much time on their hands
and they are totally immature and have no life
