If the entire filling fell out, the appointment will be quick..depending on how deep the filling they may not even need anesthetic. If part of the filling fell out, they will need to remove all the filling (the paramedic is right). Also there is a possibility that the filling did not fall out...often flash or small peices of the filling will come out....these are supposed to be carved out but sometimes get missed. Obviously if you can see the hole then this wouldn't be true. The med stusdent needs to study more...the alloy (silver filling material) unless sharp will not cause any problems. Secondly analgesics are not used the majority of time in dentistry (especially for fillings). Anesthetics are used and they are plenty safe for driving as they, for the most part, only work on the jaw.
As for the sensitivity...stay away from chewing on that side....if you had a longer wait to get back to the dentist...they have temporary filling material at most drug stores to place in the hole.

Its possible that you swallowed it, but not to worry, it will eventually come out with no ill side effects. Also to have a tooth refilled, they will have to go back in and re-drill the tooth. Its just like going for an ordinary filling. The reason for this is that the second filling will not adhere to an old filling, but rather to the tooth itself. Thats why they re-drill. Probably will take about an hour overall. Also you might try orajel swabs for pain.

NORMALLY DENTAL FILLINGS DON'T FALL OUT. GO BACK TO THAT DENTIST AND TELL WHEN IT FELL OUT. YOU SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED FOR THE REPLACEMENT, ASSUMING THIS FILLING WAS NOT TOO OLD. FOR THE SENSITIVITY, TRY NOT TO EAT/SWALLOW COLD OR SWEET THINGS, AND CHEWING THE OTHER SIDE. ADVIL IS GOOD, USING ORAJEL OR OTHER TOPICAL ANALGESICS THEY WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME AND $.

the only concern I would have is the type of filling it was and the type they are going to use old mercury fillings are toxic also what type of analgesic they will use as you will have to be lucid to drive back to work and this will take at least 1 hr or better Gorbalizer
