Yes, it makes people change their minds alot. But, no it is not really addicting, but it can be. Sometimes it is very addicting but mostly it is not.

Chocolate contains naturally occurring chemicals that stimulate your brain's control of serotonin production (Prozac uses much larger doses to do something related). This is what gives you a feeling of pleasure and wellbeing after eating dark chocolate. The darker the chocolate, the higher the caffeine content. The lighter, the higher (usually) the sugar content. All of these substances stimulate the brain and nervous system in particular ways, so can be considered habit-forming. However, it would have to be consumed in industrial quantities to create the "buzz" attributed to Class-A drugs such as cocaine or ecstasy. You could say that chocolate contains some addictive substances, but not in large enough quantities to create a dependency.

No, absolutely not. Those previous answerers who've said yes, or it can be, are using a layman's definition of addictive, which is incorrect. Addictive generally means that some physical bodily reaction occurs when the substance is no longer present in the body, such as occurs during withdrawal from alcohol, nicotine, cocaine or heroin. Such physical bodily reactions do not occur as a result of not having the components of chocolate in the body, therefore chocolate is not literally addictive.

Deleriums is dead wrong! Chocolate can certainly be addictive both physically and psychologically.
A person can get addicted to just about any substance that he or she puts in their body, if that substance provides them with a feeling they enjoy. What happens is the brain's cells actually change their shape and actions when this substance is ingested. Then when it is witheld, the cells "scream" for it and want to revert back to that mishapen state. (I am over-simplifying this chemical process)
So, since a person can get addicted to any food, chocolate us especially effective, since it has both sugar and caffeine, which are two highly addictive substances.
Now for the good news!! LOL--chocolate, especially DARK chocolate, contains flavanoids which are excellent anti-oxidants. Moderation of course, is best.

It's not physically addictive, meaning that you won't die without it, but you can definitely become psychologically addicted to food. Morbidly obese people are almost all food addicts. What I mean by "food addict" is that their brain actually releases endorphins (chemicals that make you excited or happy) when they eat or when they are about to eat. I am sure that the same thing can happen with most anything that is an endorphin-rush. Motorcycle riding, playing football, snorting cocaine and even chocolate.

Chocolate contains an enzyme which works on an area of the brain the same way, drugs or even hot chilis do. It stimulates the brain and the brain wants more.
