Or is commute time *not* that big a deal?

If YES, what amount of time (each way) would cause that to happen?

YES. I have a one way hour to two hour commute depending on traffic. That's 2-4 hours a day, 10-20 hours a week I could be playing video games, sleeping, playing with my kid, whatever. Someone else said if you like your job it isn't that bad... they're right, but a bad commute can make you like your job less. It's almost a catch-22.

Not only that, but unless you are very active to begin with it affects your health. Sitting in the same position for hours at a time, the stress of traffic, and when you get home you just want to sit down, so you probably excercise less.

If I could do it all over I would get an apartment closer to my job, rather than a house in the 'burbs.

I used to commute about an hour and 5 min. I didnt mind it at first. I actually quite enjoyed it. It allowed me time to have a coffee on the way relax and then after work I could clear my head with another long drive. I love driving though. But after a couple months it became draining. I had to get up at 5:30 every day and didnt get home until later. Also the mileage on my car wasnt good. With gas prices too I was broke. I loved the job though. If it werent for the gas prices I wouldve stayed.

I use to travel 2 hours there and back on public transportation. It can take a real big toll on your mind and body. I use to be so stressed going to work, when I finally got there I was always mean to people. Even though I couldn't wait to get off work but I knew I had that 2 hour commute back home.

An hour each way should be fine. Anything over that. STRESSFUL!

Personally, a long commute would get me down. I look around and I see that the happiest people live close to everything they do - from exercising to work.... makes life a lot easier and more time doing the things you enjoy doing.

I think it depends upon the individuals perspective..

Do you like the job? If yes then you won't mind the longer drive as much.

If no...then it may make you depressed.

Also; if you feel your spending too much time commuting and not with family, then this could bring you down as well.

But really it's an individual thing and not something you can categorize to everyone equally.

Yes, it depends on the individual but an hour to work and an hour back has shown that over time, one can suffer from depression, illnesses, etc.

I couldn't do it. It would suck. I hate waiting.

I have a 13-15 minute drive to work, 12 miles, only one stop sign and a few circles.

I have friends in LA that do 2 hours minimum each way. EFF that!
