Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain which is thought to help to soften the cervix and so bring on labour.

Is it safe?

There is very little available research. Each pineapple contains only very small amounts of bromelain so you would need to eat as many as seven to have any effect. The most likely side-effect of eating large amounts of pineapple would be a severe case of the runs.

Does it work?

There is some debate about the role played by bromelain on prostaglandins, which soften the cervix to prepare it for labour. Some studies actually suggest that bromelain inhibits prostaglandin activity while others think the opposite. Regardless of this, eating large quantities of pineapple is likely to stimulate the gut and bowel and, as with castor oil, could kick-start the uterus into action by that means.

How do I try it?

The pineapple must be fresh: bromelain is destroyed by the process of canning or juicing.

It does contain a prostin- like enzyme , so there is a little truth in it. It's a healthy food option at the very least so it's not gonna hurt to give it a go. If labour is close it may be the straw (the prostaglandin straw!) that breaks it,. Its unlikely though. If labour is iminent you will need all the energy you can get and pinapple is one of the higher fructose fruits so would give a useful energy boost in the long early hours. There are loads of supposed remedies which can precipitate onstart of labour but reality is usually more straightforward and the best helping hand you can give is positive mental attitude. GOOD LUCK

I've never heard of Pineapple being used to bring on natural labour. I was always told Olive Oil (I think it was olive oil, or some other oil, I can't remember now) but yuk, I couldn't drink that stuff, I don't know about giving birth, I would have been SICK.

As far as I know, it doesn't.

During my first pregnancy, I craved pineapple so much I should have bought stock in Dole. I literally ate tons of pineapple.

And no natural labor for me.

So if it works at all, it's definitely not a sure thing. And I have no idea what the purported mechanism would be.

my due date was yesuturday, and i have tried EVERYTHING to get labor started!!! i walk my but off, rake leaves, carry laundry baskets up and down stairs, sex, castor oil, pressure points on both hands and feet, nipple stimulation... and none of them have worked for me... i just got really sore hands and feet and nipples... i thought my body would be ready since i went into labor at 31 weeks and had to get shots to stop it... and im 1 1/2 cm dilated, 90% effaced, and baby is extremely low, but it didn't work. oh and i did eat a ton of pineapple as well... unfortunatly all these things that they tell you that induce labor are just old wives tales and none of them have ever been proven to actually work that i know of at least... most of the time when someone tries to do one of them, thats not the thing that starts labor its just a coincedence. but then again it probably has worked for some women... i don't know. you can always try and see if it works... either way you have nothing to lose... good luck!

Believe me - pineapple may be one of the examples you've been given for bringing on labour but don't rely on it!! Tried them all. Hot curry, raspberry leaf tea, rubbing oil on your nether regions, walking one foot off and one foot on the pavement (sidewalk), sex (wouldn't reccommend it!) - getting on all fours and swaying. You name it. I did it!! The baby will come when it's ready.
