Do you secretly fear that there could be a God, that the collective intuition of billions could actually be right, and it bothers you so much to think that you want to get as many other people to agree with you so you can feel more comfortable about denying it?

kind of interesting how many answered so quickly, that sort of answers the question partly.

Do you seriously think that an athiest is going to admit to something like this? :)

It would take far more sessions than a 5 second read on Y!A to get that.

No, I don't secretly or otherwise fear that there could be a god and collective intuition isn't a recognized phenomenon so I don't know what you mean when you say that. It doesn't bother me at all that billions of people don't agree with me and I don't care if they agree with me or not. If they are happy being whatever religion they are...that's fine with me. I am happy not believing in god and that should be fine with them. I never try to get people to change their minds about religion...I don't proselytize about atheism and I wish I could say the same thing about religionists. Do you secretly fear that there could be no god and it bothers you so much to think that so you want to get as many other people to agree with you so you can feel more comfortable about believing? And I don't understand why people who answered your question "so quickly" proves anything...can you explain that?

No, do you secretly fear that the flying spaghetti monster is real and that the collective intuition of an enlightened few is right and that you will spend eternity being flagellated with limp noodles.

I'd need to have a higher opinion of the average persons intelligence, reasoning skills, objectivity and awareness of their surroundings before the numerical argument would impress me. The older I get, the more I see about human nature, the more absurd the notion of 'collective intelligence' becomes to me.

I like being able to speak my mind in a forum where I know it won't lead to my being harassed, threatened, injured, fired or mistreated for not being afflicted with the expedient disease of religion. It's a nice change of pace from biting my tongue when I hear popular stupidities like bigotries of religion, race, sexual orientation. I enjoy smacking popular idiocy in the face without the practical worries over the responses of the few low natured believers who can't practice the virtues they claim to posses exclusively.

I doubt I'm persuading anyone on the matter who doesn't already seriously doubt super-naturalism. I've disbelieved in the supernatural far longer than I've known the terms for it, or known anyone else with a similar perspective. I don't need to see someone else nodding in agreement to be confident in my opinions. If everyone in the world believed the sun revolved around the earth it would still be a lie.

Nope. No secret fears here.

And NO, I don't get so bothered by the thought that I have to get as many people to agree with me so I can feel more comfortable about "denying" God. I honestly don't try to get ANYONE to agree with me. I really don't care. People can agree or not agree. Their business, just as it mine to believe that God doesn't exist.

But your question is perhaps a bit more revealing of yourself than it is of any atheist.

Conversely, could it be that you're afraid that there's nothing for you after death, that there is no God, so you need to convert as many to your side so you feel more comfortable in your own faith? Fair's fair, after all. Belief is a two-way street, not a one-way street.

No I really do think god belief is irrational. Do you secretly fear genies live in lamps and that you are missing out on your three wishes. I am sure you think that is just as silly as I think your beliefs are. If there was a just fair god I would have nothing to worry about anyway. If your god was an evil god then why would I want to worship it, and why would I trust it? Personally I think god belief is just about the most moronic of all human beliefs.

No.
I not-so-secretly fear that the collective illusion (although you can't really lump all religous believers together into one clump, since their beliefs are all so different) of billions means that superstition and fear are winning over logic and reason, which dampens my hope for the survival of the human race a bit.
I don't care if anybody agrees with me...but I DO care that they start using their minds to THINK and reason instead of blindly following religious leaders who manipulate their emotions in order to control them. The world would be a much better place if they would stop being sheep led to the slaughter and use their own brains.

No. That is such a Christian idea, trying to get everyone else to believe as you do. I am not an athiest, I do believe in some kind of "higher power" and I do believe that things happen for a reason. But I don't believe in nor do I fear the "God" that Christians created. And I certainly don't feel compelled to make anyone else believe as I do, therefore I wouldn't fit in at most Christian churches.

No. I don't fear there is a God. I only believe what I see and how I feel, and I do not feel any higher source than humans.

I don't want other people to agree with me. I don't "witness" to Christians to not believe, which is the exact opposite of what Christians are brought up to do.

I don't have to deny anything, because I can say, whole-heartedly, there is no god.

NO, I know that there is no God, and I only try to convince people when they are preaching about their God to me. Also, I think it is sad to see so many people praying to this mystical being and wasting their time!

AND...I don't know what religion you are, but, for example, say you are a Christian. If you are, do you not think you are condemned under Islamic standards? There are so many Gods to choose from, and there is no proof that YOURS is the real one!

Nope.

Do you secretly believe there isn't a god? That you're just making it all up and perpetuating the greatest con in history?

Or did you find that statement I just made to be insulting? Now you know how I feel.

Secretly fearing that they may be wrong is something Christians tend to do, as you know deep down, under the loud bravado.
