what i want to do is power my in car amp in my house to find out what is wrong with it. obviously an amp needs a remote wire do you reckon its possible to convert the neutral to a remote. e.g would i need to put a switch in line or is this a no go i would be going through a transformer is it would run at 12v

I am not sure what you mean, but if I wanted to check auto electrics in the house I'd use a car battery, perhaps with a charger to keep it topped up you can't use a transformer as that supplies AC current, and you want DC, or if you can get hold of a good rectifier with a smoothed output that might just do but personally I'd go for the battery( perhaps from the wreckers). Don't tinker with the mains, you can get very dead.

I am an electrical engineer, and I don't understand the question. Please can you explain what it is you want to do?

Update:
Thanks for your clarification.
DO NOT CONNECT YOUR AMP DIRECTLY TO THE MAINS.
You need to use a 12V transformer: the inputs to this are the live and neutral from the mains and the output wires will be + and -. To operate your amp, the remote input needs to have a positive signal, therefore for testing purposes you can simply attach it directly to the + feed of the transformer. You don't need a switch on it since you can (and should) simply turn off the transformer when you're not wanting the amp to be live.

So to summarise, the transformer AC input gets plugged into your mains socket, and both the + and the Remote inputs on the amp get connected to the + output of the transformer, and the - or Earth input on the amp gets connected to the - output of the transformer.

If you are referring to an appliance the answer is ;
you better NOT.

If you are referring to a wall socket the answer is it depends.
If the Neutral wire is really a groud wire or is uninsulated the answer is you better NOT.
If it is insulated and in a 110V circuit the answer is It depends on what your Remote wire is. Not enough information in the question to answer.
