Mathew 22 41 ¶ While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of aDavid.
43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

David is "Son of God" (bible)
Jesus is "Son of God" (bible)
X = Jesus
If X is Son of God, then X is Divine.
X is Son of god. Therefore, X is Divine.
X = David
If X is Son of God, then X is Divine.
X is Son of god. Therefore, X is Divine.

They can't have it both ways. Either the Trinity is actually a Quadity and David's part of it, OR, "Son of God" is insufficient to claim divinity.

You'll excuse my use of 1st Order logic there, prepositional logic would have been insufficient.

That is hard to explain due to the fact that the Bible is shadows and types. The Old Testament is a shadow of the New Testament. Jonah was a type.......a type of Christ in the Old Testament. There are many other types, but I would guess you get what I am trying to say.
Jesus was part of the lineage of David. In this birth line there are many types of Christs.....I don't mean that many born before were Christ. This type is basically a shadow of Christ in the Old Testament from the New Testament. Jesus is God in human form. No David was not God.....just a type and shadow. Sorry if I confused you even more.

I can't find an actual reference to Jesus being the "Son of David," but that refers to his ancestry. "Son of God" refers to his Deity. Your logic breaks down because Jesus was both man ("Son of Man") and God ("Son of God"). Your equation assumes Jesus could only be one or the other and could not be the son of both. Even logic requires context.

Your "logic" is flawed: "John is the son of Susan. John is the son of Paul. Therefore Susan is Paul." What you are missing from your logical equation is this: "John can only be the son of one person." That would make the equation true.

I looked up the reference you gave, and talk about taking something out of context! The Pharisees referred to Jesus as the "Son of David" because he came from the line of David. Jesus makes the point that he is both the "Son of David" and the "Lord of David," which is exactly the point I made above.

Jesus was born in the bloodline of King David.

Being called the "Son of David" in the time that Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth was the same as being the Messiah. That's what the "Son of David" meant.

Your logic is backwards.

c is a descendant of b; b is a descendant of a; therefore c is a descendant of a. [correct]

but b is not equal to a

Your addition points out that Jesus claimed to be the Alpha and Omega, blasphemy by Jewish standards. Re-emphasized in Revelation:
"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
Revelation 22:16

He was the literal Son of God, but he had an earthly father, Joseph. Joseph was part of the line of David, so that is why Jesus is also referred to as the Son of David. It's like saying that we are all the sons and daughters of Abraham.

Jesus asserts His right to claim the throne by explaining He's a Son (direct descendent) of David. David acknowledged to the "LORD" (YHWH) at Psalm 110:1 that the Messiah would be his "Lord" (Adonai); yet, the Messiah would sit on his (David's) throne. Therefore, David is not God.

Peace.

In the jewish way one can be called "the son of" any of his male ancestors. usualy it would be one who was most well remembered, like King David. Both Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and Joseph, Jesus' step father, were decended from King David... thus Jesus could be refered to as Son of David... that is all that is involved... it signifies that he was of the lieage of David and was eligable to be the one who fulfilled the prophesy of the Mesiah coming from the House( lineage) of David

Jesus of the mortal flesh was fully man and fully God... God caused the conception of Jesus... thus the mortal flesh that mankind saw walking on earth was The Son of God.

UH no. David is not God. the reason he was called the son of David was becuse he came from the line of David. David was his human ancestor, in ancient times a grandson or great great great grandson would or could have been called the son of so and so,,even sons of slaves of a person would be called son of the person even if not 'blood' sons, altho Jesus was blood of David through Mary. Hope that clears things up for you. :)

I agree with Sandy.
The point Jesus was making is David is not God. God created all that is and will be. He had to power to do this - so, taking a part of Himself and creating a human named Jesus would be a walk in the park.
Can you give a part of yourself for others?

If you're really interested, you should really find you a bible with a good commentary that's knowledgeable about the original language and information at that time. I suggest the Expositors Study Bible. I haven't seen anything like it, it's awesome. You can get it at www.jsm.org

Jesus was from the lineage of David. David wasn't God.
