Just read this quote, it made me laugh:

"It seems to be an intrusive nature to religion now in this country that I don't quite understand- there isn't an hour in the day where a television preacher doesn't bully his way into your living room. I see through these guys like used Neutrogena. You know, they say they don't favor any particular denomination, but I think we've all seen their eyes light up at 10s and 20s."
[Dennis Miller, from the "Black & White" show]

I'm not from the U.S., so my question is - is this unfair or accurate?

Oh and who is Dennis Miller?

There is some truth to this, sadly enough. Many "preachers" on U.S. television are greedy; they will receive their punishment soon enough.

However, there are also some very honest televangelists on American tv today.

You really can't draw an absolute conclusion regarding this issue. Dennis Miller isn't exactly an objective observer. He's a "comedian" known for his godless humor, so take what he says at face value only.

Peace.

How can they "bully their way into your living room?" Don't you have the remote in your hands, change the channel. No one "has" to watch it.

That is not an accurate portrayal of people sitting in their living rooms watching TV.

As for televangelists, I don't know if it's an accurate portrait. I don't watch televangelists. I also turn the channel when Dennis Miller comes on. He's not worth my time or my brain power.

I don't know how intrusive a televangelist can be when there is an OFF button you can push on your television set.
I like Dennis Miller and this is a funny quote. There is truth to it.
Dennis Miller is a comedian/commentator.

There aren't that many evangelists or preachers on TV, and one can easily turn the channel to something else. We have quite a few choices.

I don't watch them often, but some are clear about their religious affiliations. Not all are in it for the money, either, although certainly there are some who are. Billy Graham, who televises his crusades on TV, has an independent accounting firm handle his finances. Where the money goes is open for all to see, and he's pretty frugal in what he takes for personal income.

He was trying to be funny. However he made a common mistake. Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

And BTW. Nobody can 'bully' their way onto your TV.

You and I and Dennis Miller all have choices.

Not accurate. You don't have to watch it if you don't want to. US had hundreds of channels on TV. They don't barge in. It's there available for whomever needs it. This quote is the most bygotistical of all. If it's Dennis Miller that says a lot right there. Could have been any other fascist. would not make a difference.

A little of both. Many are just out there for the cash. I just don't think it's accurate to say they "bully their way in" to your living room. I mean we aren't prisoners to our televisions, we can change the channel or turn it off.

Absolutely accurate! And I just got a new-found respect for Miller.

Miller is a not-really -very-funny comedian from Sat. Night Live, who ventured into fillms, sports commentary and hosting talk shows, none of which he did particularly well.

I don't watch televangelists, because most of them are way off base. However, I wouldn't agree that they bully their way into your livingroom. You have to be watching the religious channel to see them. There are loads of other channels to watch.
