Many medications make peoples hair fall out. Little changes in hormone levels and mixtures of medications can make it hard to pinpoint.
Thyroid, heart and certain types hormone and steriods can all cause this. (these are just the ones I know about). Even certain diets...especially ones that radically limit one food group or portions can cause this.
So, even if she hasn't had any changes in her medications in the last year, if her bodies chemicals have changed on their own this symptom can occur.
If it is something that is really bothering her, you should ask her doctor which medications (or combination of medications) are most likely to cause this and see if there are any alternate meds she could use that may lessen the effects.
Either way, a doctor should be seen. Anytime a symptom changes wildly, she should be seen.
Congratulations to your family for being so healthy. I know some people who would not say "she is only 71"!
Good luck, I know this is a hard thing to deal with.

This is part of aging. However silicia gel may help. Me personally I use a combination of jojoba oil mixed with essential oils of clary sage, lavender and rosemary (equal parts), externally. However I'm in my 40's for preventative measures.
Also a product called Shen Men may help.
