Disney had books for children also Little Golden Books are great.
When I was a kid I had lots of Golden Book. I loved them the stories were simple and the pictures were great. I learned to read from them.

Wow! There are so many good books out there, I could probably go on forever and ever. Audrey Wood is one of my favorite authors--she has a lot of great ones like Alphabet Adventure, Alphabet Mystery, Quick as a Cricket, The napping House. Eric Carle is also a great author--The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy ladybug. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is also a great book, that children love. The alphabet goes up the coconut tree and then funny stuff happens. Runaway Bunny, Good Night Moon, Ten Apples Up on Top, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Where the Wild Things Are, Jamie Lee Curtis has a bunch of books that are a lot of fun too--Today I Feel Silly, Tell Me Again About teh Night I was born, It's hard to be five......
I am a kindergarten teacher and all of these books have a lot of value to them. They are enjoyable and fun which helps children love books. The illustrations are great and most of them teach us something about life, learning to read, or the joys of being a child.
I could just go on and on and on...go to Barnes and Noble and just sit and read----

when you go increasing your childs library be sure to include books to include real pictures of people, places and things some children are confused by all cartoon type pictures and need and want to know what actual things look like in other places.
cant remember the author but there is a whole series of books named for places and things in real life that introduces children to the same sorts of things all over the world-- bread, homes, transportation, clothing, families, etc. dont believe there were many words but all of my children (home/work) loved them.
also richard scary books are very good for teaching opposites
and then some old favorites--peter rabbit, mother goose rhymes, shel silverstien poems, good night moon, any tana hoban book, the curious george book series, bernstain bears set, any eric carle book (very hungry caterpillar was always my favorite) but he has lots, brown bear, brown bear; polar bear polar bear;i want the moon, little man/little woman series, some other classics i would not be without--stone soup, traditional fairy tales 3 bears, 3 pigs, are ok but most are too scary for younger ones, some of the dr seuss books like green eggs and ham; one fish, two fish;...;hand, hand fingers, thumbs;the foot book but again not all dr seuss books are good for this age too long mostly.
have fun and explore with your child try looking at the library if you find an author you especially like you can then try to collect all of their work.

I agree with most of the above, but would also recommend any Sandra Boynton books. Some of our favorites by her are:
Hippos Go Berserk
Bedtime Book
Snuggle Puppy
Philadelphia Chickens (comes w/music CD)
Pajama Time
She has a ton! Most of them are rhyming books and are illustrated very well!

Are you my mother?
We have a lot of books. Shelves full of books. But the one that the kids love the most is Are You My Mother?
It probably gets taken off the shelf more that all the other books put together.

To start teaching reading: Bob Books (better than any other early readers I have found).
For storytime, check out Francis (who has been around since I was a kid). Bedtime for Frances, Best Friends for Frances, and so on.

We have the whole Sesame Street alphabet series which are board books AND you can turn them over to make a giant floor puzzle. My son loves his set and we've gotten a lot of use out of them over the past 2 years. (Here's what they look like: http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-30-Sesame-Street-ABC-Alphabet-Board-Books-Puzzle_W0QQitemZ230040917303QQihZ013QQcategoryZ279QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Otherwise, I love the classics--Seuss, Good Night Moon, Runaway Bunny, David books, If you Give a Mouse a Cookie (etc.) . . .

green eggs and ham - dr suess...... it's the very best!!!!!!!!!!!! Taught all 3 kids to read with that book. Read it to them until they could read it themselves. We read all sorts of other books too, but there is something about Dr. Suess they love. Fox in Sox is great too. Maybe I like them because they keep me amused too.
