Legally, no. The transaction is legally a single transaction whereby you are paying for a collection of goods. Ethically, it's up to you whether you think it's theft or not. Keep in mind they will not chase you down to correct the situation if they charge you twice for the same item.

Short answer: yes, technically you are a thief, even though that wasn't your plan. If you are a religious person who thinks god is watching this kind of stuff, you should pay it back. If you, like me, are an atheist, you should pay it back because it's the right thing to do even if you're not worried about going to hell if you don't. The cashier will have to make up the money, and why do that to someone who hasn't done anything to you?

An accidental thief, but a thief. The cashier may have to replace the extra money, which is a bad thing. I've walked six blocks in freezing weather when living in Chicago to return an extra $10 to a clerk who had given me too much change. It's just the right thing to do.

I don't know if I would say you are a thief since you really didn't steal the item, but not correcting the mistake when you saw it occur, was dishonest. If you take the item back and pay for it, it won't mean that much to the store, but it will be important to your own character.

I can't count how many times I picked up an item on sale but then paid full price. But it's probably happened the other way too, and I didn't even know. I think it all evens out.
But, if you go back and pay, it would be a very honorable thing.

Yes, if you know that the cashier made a mistake and you don't call her on it, and you keep the money, you are a thief.

Yes, you should have taken it back....That happened to me once and I didn't realize it until I left the store. I went back inside and gave her the money. I just didn't feel right about keeping it, it wasn't mines. Plus, the cashier may get in trouble if the register's short.

It is definitely an out in integrity. Theft is as much a matter of intent as it is actions. If your intent is dishonesty, then you are a thief. If you really had to ask this question to make up your mind, you need to do some serious introspection.

technically yes. However the real responsibility lies with the cashier. I would generally inform them of the mistake and pay for the item.
