The answer to your question is yes. But it is not often that this happens. More commonly is strep throut which can cause the same symptoms.

I've always heard that once you have mono, you never get it again....but it can take up to 6 months to get over it.

When I had it as a teen...i never was the same again. I used to be energetic and a fair runner. I never regained my speed and energy, but also credited it to puberty and maturity.

There are a lot of viruses and bugs around that have some of the same symptoms of mono; so could be just a bug. If you are running a high fever, abdominal pain, or colored discharge ; call your doc.

Mononucleosis is also known as the Epstein Barr Virus after the researchers who first identified the virus back in the '60s.

Look up Epstein bar virus on the net, you can get a good search using the keywords "epstein barr virus immunity". The wikipedia entry is very good. Anyway, as far as I know you can't get EPV twice, sort of like you can't get chickenpox twice, and they are in similar viral families.

EPV in some people seems to trigger chronic fatigue syndrome, so that is something to look out for in terms of your symptoms. There is also a postulated link between the various herpetic viruses (of which EPV is one) and later incidences of Multiple Sclerosis and other auto-immune disorders in a recent study (published June 2006), so pay attention to any weird on again off again symptoms that seem to have no other explanation but that interfere with your daily functioning.

Good luck in the mean time.
