I found a black kitten a few weeks ago. He matches the description of a Bombay (in features and personality). But it seems weird that someone would abandon such an expensive cat...

You just never know what people will do. Two of my 3 cats are strays that I took in. The first one (only male) is b&w. Vet said that he probably has some Bombay in his bloodline somewhere. He has many characteristics, but Bombays are not bicolored. When we found him, he was on my husband's truck (in the wheel-well) during a storm. I had come home from work and heard him crying in there. So, I went over and picked him up. The rest is history.

The second stray we took in showed up from our neighbor's house. The house had been repossessed from the bank, so it was vacant. Since this cat is so friendly to people, there is no way she was a feral cat. My theory is that the previous owners left her, as she "lived" under their deck. She was so thin, so I started feeding her. She is a black tortie. Then she became pregnant. I couldn't let her have her kitties outside (it was cold), so I brought her in. Now, she is NOT thin. :-) Her kitties were 3 solid black, 1 orange tabby, and one classic calico.

Two of her kittens (2 of the black ones) went to my husband's uncle. He never had them fixed (grrr!), and they had a litter. The kittens were born white, but the time they were 6 weeks old, they were the color of Russian Blues. Obviously, they aren't pure Russian Blue, but doggone it do they ever look like it. Oh, and obviously, I had to take one of them home! :-D

So, my two points:
1) Some people really don't care about animals.
2) Could be a mixture of a bunch of breeds with just the dominant color coming out.

I bet it's adorable!!!

Chances are HIGH that it is NOT a Bombay. Most breeds of cats came about from spontaneous kittens apperaing in litters. I work at a cat shelter and we see about 100 litters a year. Trust me, there are frequently littens that look like they are a certain breed. I have seen MANY black kittens that look like Bombay. Black is a dominant color and you get some in litters that had parents that were not even black.
It is probably a great kitten and cute as can be, but even if it WAS a Bombay, you could not prove it without papers.

My guess would be the kitty you found is a Bombay mix or just closely resembles one. Chances are no one paid for the cat you have. I have a Maine Coon mix I got from the shelter and I've often seen Siamese and Himalayans there as well. Most people are not aware of the numerous breeds of cats and just think a cat is a cat. I hope he has a good home now.

a lot of people are dumb in the world. They probably didnt have any knowledge of cats what so ever.

People are the same way with dogs. They mistreat or abandon pure bred dogs that they could have just sold in the first place.
