I have a three year old male Chihuahua that we adopted a year ago. The only time that he pees in the house is when we are sleeping. I crate him when I'm out and we tried crating him at night, but he puts up a fight. He pees by the bed. We pick up the water about 9pm. Also what can I do to get the smell out? I have tried so much.

First of all, I would put him in the crate at night as well. Let him make a fuss, he'll get used to it (dogs are just like children, they learn through repetition). You've already spoiled him by letting him sleep anywhere he wants at night, now you have to get him used to a new learned behaviour...it will not be easy. Second, I use a product called "Pro Solve" stain remover, it works very well on urine, feces or vomit. The other alternative is to go to your Vet and ask for something to remove the stain and the smell. But please note, once an animal has peed on your carpet, it's really tough to get out all of the smell, depending on how badly it soaked the foam under your carpet.
Good luck.

Any time a dog that was potty trained, starts going in the house you need to check with a vet that it isn't medical. Bring in a fresh am urine sample the day you go to the vet, plastic cup, even a ziplock (but double bag), you don't need much urine, just a little. It could be a UTI, which can get very serious if left untreated. My female dog had the same issue years ago and she had something called vaginitis. Is she kicking herself down there more than normal? The vet will test that too. Maybe there's a structural change? You just don't know until you see a vet. Once all the medical stuff is ruled out, it could be marking. Has anything changed in the house? Is someone sick? A new person living in the house? Did someone move out? Have the social dynamics changed? Is there more stress in the house? Think if all this, but the fact remains, she is the dog and must learn to live and behave in this new environment, if that's the case. You need to start from the beginning, retrain, if marking

I think that you should put a dog door so that he can get out at night whenever he wants to pee. That may be the reason that he pee's at night, because he doesn't have anyone to open the door for him in the middle of the night. And I'm not sure how you can take the smell out.

I also have chihuahuas. We have found that using housebreaking pads in the house works very well. This does not mean that they can't also go outside to go to the bathroom,it justmeans that there is a place for them to go when they can't get outside. Our dogs use them alot. You can find them at any pet store. We buy ours at Wal-Mart. They look like hospital bed pads, but they're not. They have a smell on them that tells the dog, they can go to the bathroom on it. You just place it on the floor someplace out of your way where they can go to the bathroom on it. After it gets stinky or too dirty, you just roll it up,throw it away, and put a clean one down. Good luck!

You can try using a belly band. It is a cloth band that velcros around their waist. That is what I used on our male. They don't like having pee against their skin so after a couple accidents in their band they stop. I purchased mine from a dog rescue organization since they don't sell them in stores (they are kind of a breeder's secret). The nice thing is they are not that expensive and are custom made to fit your dog. If you had your little boy neutered after he hit puberty he may never stop marking so you might always have to have him wear the band while he is indoors. Never yell or spank your dog though, all this teaches them is not to do it in front of you and they will begin hiding their "accidents." Good luck!

When my dog was a puppy, my mom kept him behind a gate in the kitchen as a means of training. As for your dog, I suggest trying the same thing until he learns that it is not okay to pee in the house. I know, it took a lot of patience.

Try removing his water a little earlier and take him out a coupe of times before you go to bed. If the carpet is a small removable one take it out. Other than that try putting your dog somewhere else to sleep.

ground pepper works great! sprinkle it around his favorite pee spot and see what he does next!!!! they don't like the smell of it up their nose....he will no that's no longer his claiming spot. we use a pet friendly soap spot and odor remover. It works wonders.....I haven't had a problem with our puppy since I started using a sprinkle of pepper here and there......The stain remover is called Natures Remover. Good luck:)
