While being trained in employee conflicts, I was taught how to recognize the difference when an individual is actually listening to the questions and those looking for a way to make their pre concieved ideas and opinions known. I see this quite often on this site when questions are asked and the answerer does not even come close to answering the question or doesn't even consider the information that the questioner has put up there. I just think that if people would actually LISTEN to the information included in the questions, as well as some of the answers, people could actually consider what is being said before making their comments, which so many times veer way off of the question and quite honestly reveal the lack understanding the individual has or refuses to use. What do you think?

Great feedback from most. Thanks blindog for your insight, good point Mary.
Fireball 226, does the question you posed 4 days ago, "what was your best day this week"..." qualify" as a proper question?

Yes I agree. you have to read every word, not just read the question, but he additional comments to understand how the writer wanted to be perceived in order to give a good answer.
I have yet to see what would be referred to as a stupid question, because every question is formed with a genuiness to it. Where as every answer is formed to convey their point. And I have also seen this happen to me, no matter how respectfully I try to phrase the question, there is someone who always finds my question to be disrespectul. This I dont understand since theorhetically it is a question, and a question to me refers to not knowing.

To be fair i think some of this burden falls on the question and the questioner. For some questions, in my experience typically the better worder questions, there is a necesity to understand and use the information that is put in the question and the information. Usually these questions dont make a whole lot of value judgements in the question or at least seem more open in their stance. I think for questions like these, people with more preconcieved stances are perhaps less interested because nothing really induces them to bring a more set stance forward. Also, the respondent doesnt have to be put on the defensive right away because the question is less hostile.
However i think when questions are set up where you can tell intent and understand what the writer wants, its easier to find the phenomona you have noticed. If a question is hostile in nature people are going to either agree or disagree, before they read any additonal statements or opinion. Therefore people are going to stick with their first inclinations, which tend to be rather set when dealing with closed minded questions.
To the answer issue, i think a lot of times people really answer mostly the first few questions that are up and when that is happening someone else might write a shorter response which has parts of information they could have used or elucidated their response already. Some people just want their voice to be heard either way.
However all in all i agree with you in part, but feel it is not solely the respondants fault. If the quality of questions rose a bit (and this might not be practical or fair) i think we would find that the quality of response would also rise in general.

Or they read only the dark print and ignore the detailed explanation. This site has a HUGE gamut of people of all ages, races, back grounds and locations. And of course, like certain parts of our anatomy's, we all have opinions. It's more important to attempt to answer peoples questions' with as much fact as humanly possible, and then if there is room for an opinion, OK fine, throw that in there if applicable. That's where it comes back upon the asker to discern between what is an actually thought out, fact answered response and what is just being answered to get a couple lousy points. I think if more people thought about their questions before asking them, their answers could be answered themselves. But people use this as a sounding board of sorts to voice their opinions concerning issues, and that is when answers need to discern whether or not it is answer worthy. And if people didn't answer questions that were totally stupid, then people would quit writing them. What do you think about that?

Dooder, I disagree. Most folks do answer with all honesty and good intentions. You have a few folks that just don't care, but that's in any segment of society. Plus, how can you LISTEN to the information when it is in print? Just something to think about.

I reply with the intent to make points which I've noticed is the primo reason for being on Yahoo.
A way to make their preconceived opinions known--don't you ask for our opinion? Well hell, we're gonna give it.
And why is this in the religious section? Didn't you read and listen to the headings? What has this to do with religion??

Maybe so. I also think that a lot of the "questions" posed are not questions intended to ellicit an answer, but a way of letting the questioner express an opinion that he/she holds.

This is a question and answer forum, Just because you might not agree with what someone posted as their answer, does not mean that they did not "listen to the question".

Sorry, but how can you listen to one of these questions when all you can actually do is read them? And no I didn't READ your question all the way through to the end because it sucks.
