Atheism requires but one thing - being without belief in a god or gods. You don't have to throw away religious literature. I'm an atheist and I have a Bible in my house. Atheism adheres to no particular "how it all began" theory. After being without belief in deities, everything else is left up to the individual atheist.

As it was said before, being an atheist doesn't mean anything else but not to believe in God. Atheism is not a religion with certain rules and dogmas.
As an atheist you don't have to throw away all religious literature. You can read it and think about it, the difference is that you look at it as books written by human beings who could have good or bad ideas and write true or wrong things. And if you are not interested, then it's also possible that you never have a look at it.
As an atheist you don't have to "go back to the survival of the first organism", although I have to admit I don't really understand what you mean by that. Do you mean "survival of the fittest"? This is just a fact that is observed in nature, it is not a moral rule. I am convinced the theory of evolution is correct but I don't accept any kind of Social Darwinism, I am very much convinced in ethics and justice and that the weak get their right. This is not a "teaching of atheism", but it is my conviction and that of many others, not of everyone.
As an atheist I can't explain you how do matter and energy exist eternally, but honestly, I never heard that a religious person could actually explain that. As an atheist you can be so honest and admit that there are things you don't understand.
As an atheist of course you can't create life, but again I have to say, religious people also can't create life. The theory of evolution doesn't say that humans were able to create life.
As an atheist you don't think you are God.

How does energy exist eternally? Well, laws of physics state that energy cannot be created nor destroyed - only changed. This is how it exists eternally.... Just like "God" - it just DOES.

Yes, man at this point cannot just "create" life.... but this is not proof of the existence of God. That is called the SIMPLICITY argument - that since man hasnt a reason or answer, then God must have done it - its the easiest explanation. It is also an erroneous one....

As for what you must beleive in order to be an Atheist, that is simple. We beleive NOTHING. Everything we know is KNOWLEDGE that has been arrived at through research and logical progression.

My understanding is a true atheist doesn't believe in anything-no spiritual world, no gods/goddesses at all. An agnostic is someone who's undecided as to whether there is a God (as in the male deity described in monotheistic religions). Pagan's are relly neo-pagans and see nature as the spiritual other-world but aren't into animal sacrifice (or human especially). I'm not sure but there might be a few who still do the Egyptian religion; non-believer is a better term to mix all 'not Xian' (or anti-any kind of mono-deity) in

*****

there are different theories as to how things were created and whether anything spiritual was involved in the process other than either God did it or it was all evolution

Quite simply, BELIEVE that there is NO God.

Though that is difficult to do ... just look at the starry sky, the glorious sunsets, the marvel of a gray seed in the brown earth sending forth green shoots which then produce marvellously-coloured flowers, and specially-designed kinds of seeds.

An atheist does not believe in God. Period. Nothing more. No additional complications. You can believe in anything else you want.

Have fun,
