Have you watched the news lately? Read the newspapers? Do you know that this war in Iraq is doomed, just as Vietnam was doomed? Iraq will be a blot on U.S. history. A huge, pitiful mistake. Tell your friend NO. If he wants to do something good for his country, get an education. Volunteer for the millions of community service groups. Don't get maimed or killed for nothing.

So he wants to join the military?? That's not a bad thing. You should be proud of him. It's an honor to serve ones country. There's also a great deal of pride in knowing that you're protecting the rights and freedoms of your friends and relatives back home. That alone shouldn't be the reason though. Many young men have joined all gung-ho and found out it wasn't band camp. He needs to be sure it's what he wants to do. Some of the things he sees and does could change his life forever. Why don't you want him to go?? Getting killed really isn't a good reason. Especially since he has a good chance of coming back safe and sound. In fact, believe it or not, the risks are quite low. It's just as dangerous to drive to work everyday.

If he decides it's what he wants to do, wish him the best. Tell him to do his job and come home safe. And be sure to tell him thanks.

Going to Iraq to do what?

If he is in the military he will have no choice in the matter and thats what he joined for.

If he is going for fun and adventure he is an idiot.

If he is going to show his solidarity with the iraqi people and to protest the war he is a naive idiot.

If its either of the last two he will probably end up getting kidnapped and some poor bugger will have to risk his life rescuing him, thats if the bad guys havent already rendered all his neck ties redundant.

That depends on why he wants to go there. I know missionaries who went to Afghanistan, so it occurred to me that he might not be in the military.

If he's in the military, then I encourage him to serve alongside his brothers (and sisters) in arms.

If he's going as a humanitarian or missionary... I'd agree with Jack R, tell him to buy a good insurance policy, a helmet, and a beard. Make sure the policy doesn't exclude "acts of terrorism" or war as most do. Or better yet, find someplace slightly less hostile to make a difference.

Why does he want to go? Why do you not want him to go?

FYI serving in Iraq is only slightly more dangerous than spending 4 years in college. (Look at the death rates for college students vs. soldiers who spend a year in Iraq.)

It's his choice. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's the truth. Support him and he may come through. Don't tear him down, because he'll only be stubborn. I have a cousin in D.C protecting the president, so I worry about him. My point is that let him do what he wants to do.

Well thank you for stating the obvious to him.

but you know what you can tell him . tell him you will keep in touch.
tell that you will write him from time to time and keep him up to date on current events in your life and your friends lives
tell him the funny things that happing in life .
tell him anything that will bring joy into his heart while he is away.

people in arms at Iraq need people to remember them while they serve. take a lil bit of home to him . it will make his day.

getting a letter from home is the best next to breathing in a hostile environment

tell him you will write to him and then do it consistently

Your friend could die in the U.S. too. We are at WAR. People die. Statistically, out of the 400,000 troops who have served in the war in Iraq...less than 3000 have died.....so do the math.

Don't tell him, just show him! Get a clippings from daily reports from yahoo and let him decide himself. If he got family, he'll think it over.
It's no joke, to live everyday, every minute if you will survive until tomorrow.
