Depends on your income and preferences. Some people are wealthy and love fancy events, so they might spend $100,000 on a wedding... some people see no need for a formal event and just go the courthouse to be married by a county official for a small fee.
Ask yourself what sort of wedding you would enjoy, and how many of your friends and family you would want to attend. Then work out the costs from there. Also factor in if your family or his will contribute to the costs.
A good rule of thumb is that the wedding should not cost more than your car. For example, if your car is worth about $5,000, and your fiancee can afford a car that is $25,000, then you could afford a wedding that costs about $30,000. That would provide a nice event for about 100-120 people.
Another option is, instead of registering for household items, is to register for your honeymoon and have people donate to your exotic honeymoon to Morocco. So you could have your (wedding) cake and eat it too!

It's ironic you would ask this question today because I just read in the Toronto Sun, yesterday, that the average Canadian wedding will cost $20,000-$30,000!! Which is so true because the estimated cost of my wedding (next year) is around $24,000 right now! I am sure it would be around the same amount in other countries. This figure is based on a 150 person reception and it includes every last dollar amount you would spend for a wedding. Good luck on the savings...I wish I had done that!

It all depends how how big you want your wedding to be.
Personally, I have a VERY hard time even considering paying more than $500 bucks for my wedding. What I would like to do is spend a bit more on the honeymoon than the wedding!
My sister did her wedding for $578 bucks all together. She had a dress, reception, flowers, brides maids, grooms men, cake... the works... but she got people to volunteer for things.
I made her cake.
We picked flowers (with permission) from the churches flower beds she got married... (turned out BEAUTIFUL)
She borrowed her dress.
Us bridesmaids bought our own dresses at JCP.
Groomsmen wore black pants with a nice shirt from JCP (same color)
Women brought reception food/potluck.
They made their own invites
Hired a family photographer for cheap (discounted as a wedding present).
Anyways... she had a beautiful wedding... and barely had to do anything for it! Let alone spend tons of money on it!
Then... they took a nice honeymoon on the west coast beaches...

The average american wedding is now just over $22,000. Ofcourse that depends on location, size, etc. But the average ocsts are going up like crazy. I say save the money, and elope oneday to a FABULOUS destination wedding. Less stress, better memories...

Average.... that means based on high society as well as elopers. The current US average cost of a wedding is $22,000 but every year that price rises (inflation and such) and the "average" citizen's wedding generally doesnt get that high. The average citizen's typical wedding ranges from about $7500 to $10000. Do ALOT of shopping around to save yourself money when you get that far because costs will continue to rise.

Unfortunately the "Average" is about $20k for a wedding. But just because it is average doesn't mean you have to do it. My wedding is going to be in May 07 and our wedding is going to be no more than $5k. Yeah it won't be as fancy but all that extra money goes to our home which is more important.

They say the average wedding costs around $20,000 but we spent about $8,000 -$10,000 tops on ours, same with two of my friends. My sister on the other hand was more around $26,000. It depends on how formal you'd want it...where you'd want...how many guests, etc. Ours was small and beautiful and I wouldn't change it for the world.
