Sometimes the walk signal doesn't last that long and if the traffic is clear why wait for the signal to change? I've done it and I am across the street before the cars come and hog the cross walk. In my city quite few people have died in the cross walks with the walk signal on. Drivers just don't stop or wait if they are turning. I take no chances in that regard.

Whenever I see a button I have to push it, especially the button that opens the doors in undergrounds, trams, buses and trains. It is just a "tic". However, I suppose most people simply push the button out of habit, next start looking around and if they notice it is safe they cross anyway.

How about those people who keep hitting the button? Like smacking it 20 times will make it turn to a walk sign.

Just one of the symptoms of modern problems: People WILL NOT wait their turn anymore. No one thinks he should have to wait, even if it means getting creamed by a city bus!

The polite answer would be that they are impatient or in a hurry. The not-so-nice answer is that they're not too bright.
