Wow. Such strong reactions! To say that "the Catholic Church" feels one way or another is not answerable. The official church is an institution without feelings. Since the Church is made up of millions, we can find people feeling completely one way, completely the other, and at all points between. The official teachings, writings, laws, of the Church are not anti-feminine. In some cases, they praise women and their gifts, abilities, graces as unattainable by men merely because the Church believes God gives graces that compliment our natures- some to suit male nature, some to suit female, and some that suit both. To believe the Church says or thinks women are less (as opposed to feeling women are less) is to state that one has not read the Church s teachings. The Church does believe, state, and presumably feel, that only women should give birth and suckle children. The official writings also state a belief that women have a kind of intuitive understanding and response that men do not have, among other things.... This is getting long. Hope it helps. MW, a woman religious of the Catholic Church.

Because the Catholic Church is dominated by men and since the council of Nicea when Catholocism amalgamated with Paganism during Constantine's reign they got rid of the Goddess figure mostly except for keeping remnants of her power in the Virgin Mary.
The feminine ideal of divinity was mainly worshiped until this time. Since Mary gave birth to Jesus who the catholics believe is God, then Mary still holds some Goddess status except for the fact that she is still considered lower than the male concept of the God who impregnated her. This was a clever way the Catholics kept the male power dominant from and most likely one of the reasons they state the trinity is father, son, holy spirit.
But the Trinity was actualy representative of the goddess' womb, which gave birth to the universe in her creational powers.
If the world was ruled by women, it would be much holier. Women have less ego and anger.

OK, which is it?
Catholics are criticised for venerating the Blessed Virgin Mary, as the most perfect creation of God, the one who gave her flesh to Jesus Christ, the mother of the church, and the queen of heaven.
Then, Catholics are criticised for not respecting women.
For the record, women are no better and no worse than men. Both were created by God just the way he wanted them to be.
The fact that women can have children, and men can't, or that men can be priests, and women can't, has nothing to do with inequality.
It's just the way things are, according to the one who made us, who personally founded the church, and who still remains the head of it.

Because the Catholic chruch is unfortunately rather misguided.
I also wonder why they believe in praying to Mary, last I checked God didn't ask us to route his calls through his secretary.....
Well, and it says that women were created from mans rib - which many people take to mean that women should be "hidden" within her husband. What a lot of people don't realize is that the original text actually just said that woman was created from man and gave the idea that she may have been created from a part of him on or near his side. It was a Catholic that decided during translations later on that it should specifically say that she was made from a rib because he believed that God's reasoning would say she should be hidden - seen only when a man feels he should.
Oh and black_hole_gravity you should really look in to the original wording of the scripture you mention because the word submit is not intended to mean what the average American thinks when they hear it. Also, you completely forgot to mention Ephesians 5:21 - "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Yea, that's commonly overlooked eventhough it's directly before the quote you put out there. Oh, and when taken by the original text the term "head" (..."For the husband is the head of the wife".....) actually translates to "life source" meaning that the husband is supposed to seek God before the woman and essentially help his wife stay toward God also.

there might be some literal bible quotations which imply that, and it might be practiced that way in some countries that already think women are less (ie countries with a lot of machismo) but that is not the way of the catholic church in the U.S., for the most part. again, it's all how you interpret it. if you already think that men are above women, whether you are a family or a country, then yeah, that's how you're going to use religion to your advantage. if you don't, then you will ignore all that and interpret things in a new and more equal way.

The Pope does. The Pope has the final say. You're sinful if you go against the Pope, so either accept it or become a Protestant and go to a Church where a Woman is a Minster and there are many such Protestant Churches.

because the bible says so.
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything." (Ephesians 5:22-24)
"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church." (I Corinthians 14:34-35)
"Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve... (I Timothy 2:11-14)
"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." (I Corinthians 11:3)
"For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man." (I Corinthians 11:8-9)

They do not. We love one of God's greatest creations who is a woman but, everyone else belittles her. Why is that? I am speaking of The Blessed Virgin Mary. If you mean why aren't women priests? Well, that's easily answered--the priest stands in for the Bridegroom Jesus here on Earth. Jesus was a man so the priest needs to be a man. Only a male sacrifice could atone for sin. That's the way God wanted it so that's the way it is.
