There are a couple things to keep in mind when purchasing skates of any kind, and those are the type of skating he will be doing, and the size of his foot. Hockey rollerblades are the best all around rollerblade, and I'd recommend buying the Mission brand as they are lightweight, durable, and most importantly, comfortable. When it comes to sizing, you want to be very careful as even a slight mistake can end up costing you quite a bit of cash. Generally, skates fit around .5 to 1 full size smaller than your shoes. Your toes should touch the tips of the skates, but not be crammed in. Your best bet would be to take the size out of his current skates and go with that if you don't want him to know about this gift. In terms of price, there are a great many skates that under $300, but still just as good as the $500 ones.

Good luck...

Sometimes you can get a pair of used rollerblade boots that were used ,if fit well.Recreation rollerblade boots allows the foot to breathe much better if he is not playing hockey.Apec 3 to 7 bearings is good.Rubber compound wheels not plastic . There is a chart you can get at a good sports store that will tell you how to fit ones need.P.S. If you buy used and the wheels etc. are not good then fit them out with new wheels and bearings, and you have what you want at alow cost.Otherwise get the ROLLERBLADE chart and get a new pair to match .I have thousands of miles on an old pair of ROLLERBLADE brand that I purchased new about 10 yrs. ago.And loves it too.
