The study of families and family relationships especially tracing family roots back through generations. I am a Scottish genealogist and have a lot of fun helping people get started tracing their roots. Genealogy can cover more than just families. I once did a presentation of the Genealogy of a Nation (Scotland) and it was well received.

Genealogy is the study and tracing of family pedigrees. This involves the collection of the names of relatives, both living and deceased, and establishing the relationships between them based on primary, secondary and/or circumstantial evidence or documentation, thus building up a cohesive family tree. Genealogy is sometimes also referred to as family history, although these terms may be used distinctly: the former being the basic study of who is related to whom; the latter involving more "fleshing out" of the lives and personal histories of the individuals involved.

I want to think that in all the years I have devoted to studying and researching to find out where my family came from, it would mean looking at generations of people before me and learning how they lived, where they lived, and how they interacted with the people around them (like, why did he marry one of his own second-cousins, anyway.....we don't do that). If I look at it a different way, I have been working literally for generations trying to figure out where my family came from. The first option sounds better, so I'm going to go with it because it makes me feel all of my frustrations have been worth it. Maybe there is some trickery in the naming of 'genealogy', I'll believe about anything at this point!
