it means to me empower people to take care of themselves instead of giving them what they need, they should be taught to provide for themselves

It's very basic..."EMPOWERMENT"
Let's say you always carry your child every where and never teach them how to walk. Yes, they will always get where they need to go because you will be taking them there. But where is the vision to grow? But if something were to happen to you, what would happen to your child, what would it do???? Teach that child how to walk and the door is open. Independence, vision, skills, free will, and ability are all tools that we need to function. Take away someones vision and they are lost. When we as a society do not show our fellow man that they can be or do anything we are limiting them to a life of worthlessness. Empower someone and you have just giving them a gift of life, freedom, and the knowledge that they have a purpose. And yes, I could be better at it. We are guilty of enabling someone at sometime in our lives.

It means that rather than doing for people, you should help them do for themselves. This makes you an advocate rather than an enabler. This is definitely a strong quality I have because it is a mind set I live by. Furthermore, I work taking care of people with mental retardation, and there is no greater gratification in my job than when I have taught one of my residents something that brings her one step closer to functioning in society.

if we think about africa and some of the problems in that continent, we can't just dump food on them and hope that things get better, the food runs out, and then we're back to square on.

we need to give them the tools and knowledge so they can be self sufficient and support themselves year after year. this is not as simple as all that, and until the worlds leaders pledge more money to helping the african continent instead of buying bombs and guns, then africa will continue to struggle.

When you are given something for nothing, the feeling of satisfaction and self worth does not last. If you work and earn the things that you have, you will accomplish a feeling of satisfaction and self worth that will last a lifetime.

It's just telling us that the man would survive longer if he is not dependant on someone to constantly help him. Teach him to be independant and to help himself whenever he has a need.

To me it means that we should not "coddle" people. Do not baby someone when they are down on their luck or feeling sorry for themselves. Show them how to get up and help themselves, do not just give them a temporary solution to an ongoing problem.

To me it just means that it's better to empower someone in need with information or education, rather than just giving that someone (freebies) hand-outs.
