I homeschool according to the SOLs but I am wondering what kinds of reports the kids write in fifth. How long, what topics?

Also, what is the required reading for fifth? Meaning, what titles?

Ugh, stupid uneducated dolts. I was looking for how long and involved essays are at this stage. And if you think that hs kids dont work on group projects you must watch too much Wife Swap. My kids are involved in all kinds of groups and there are homeschool coops and even schools for certain classes such as biology. My ten year old reads and spells at a college level, does 7th grade math. But being a hs mom I was hoping smart moms would respond with details on what public school kids are expected to turn out on an essay, what books they are given to read. My child already reads college level reading but I was hoping for titles of what idiot kids like yours are reading. :)

My son is in 5th and so is his best friend, who is public school. Their essays in ps are probably 5 pages, front and back. I seem to recall he had to write a 200 word essay on an inventor last year.

Don't be put off by the other answers, they must be public school parents who are afraid of homeschool parents. They probably feel they are slacking off by letting ps babysit their kids and they take it out on homeschoolers. Bullys really.

This depends on the school district, but most 5th graders study U.S. Geography, American History, sentence structure in grammar, body functions and parts in science, sexuality in health (this is the year they learn about the birds and bees, if you will), and they learn to respect other people and other opinions. Children in school also learn to share ideas and work as team members on projects (which home schooled children cannot learn and will have difficulty with someday in the working world). They learn to brainstorm ideas and they learn how to sift through ideas of others to form their own opinions and ideas. As for specific book series, look online for your local school district and you'll see the books they use.

You are teaching your children at home and you have no idea what to teach them? I'd suggest sending your kids to a normal school where professionals can instruct them properly. Join the PTA to keep an eye on the teachers and help your kids with their homework.
