Should I give them cash (although it feels kind of weird and impersonal), or a gift card (what kind of gift card??). They just move into a tiny apartment but friends and family have given them most of what they need (stuff for the kitchen, ect).

cash does seem impersonal but I guess it's more common than I thought. especially if they didn't put together a registry, how are u supposed to know what to get them? I think it means they want some fresh bills.

DON'T give them alcohol unless it is a "collector's" bottle of wine or champagne and they are in fact collectors. This will cost you more than a "normal" gift though as any wine or champagne acceptable as a wedding gift to a collector would range in the hundreds or thousands of dollars.

What type of culture is it?
Some cultures expect you to give cash and NOT a gift at a wedding.

How close are you to them?
If you are close, you need to actually shop for a gift (unless it is inappropriate because of the culture) regardless of whether they have a registry or not. If you are not very close to them you can get away with cash or the "cheesy" gift certificate if they don't have a wedding registry. If they are a business client just give them a check and a card, if they are a friend as well then determine how close.

There are certain gifts appropriate for certain types of marriages no matter what.

1- Redneck marriages: A shotgun, a fiddle.
2- Gay (men) marriage: vaseline and gerbills or a plunger
3- Lesbians: A video camera and internet acess if they are hot, if not get them some combat boots and overalls.
4- Arabs: c4
5- scientologists: cyanide laced cake. A gift for them AND you and the rest of the world.

Give them a card with money.. I just got married 7 months ago and the money given was great. It helped us out a lot. They will probably get 5 toasters, pots and pans duplicates of a lot of things andthen they have to go and return all of the things. Make if easier on yourself and on them, money is a great wedding gift.

cash...or a gift card for something they don't need but want. you know, stuff you wouldn't buy for yourself. like a couples day spa, or even dinner to their favorite restuarant but it's too expensive. a gas card is also good with the gas prices going up. even a visa gift card so they can use it anywhere they want.

Get them something that you would like to recieve at your wedding. Give them a bottle of champagne and champagne glasses or something simple. Give them a gift card to go see a movie or something fun so they can enjoy it together.

Depends on how well you know them. Nothing wrong with giving money or gift cards...people ususally use them for their home or to save. Ask them. If can't, just get a certificate somewhere.
