I didn't have my heat on in my house last week. It got a bit cold then turned around and got warm the next day. The bird died a couple days later. Nothing else different happened. Could it have been the temperature change?

for such a tiny body, what feels like a small cooling and warming to us feels drastically magnified for them...try and keep their living temperatures as stable as you can. Sudden shifts like that have killed many a parakeet.
"Parakeets are originally from the Australian grasslands. This means they lived life in temperate weather. This wasn't the broiling desert - but neither was it the frigid arctic. You want your budgies to be at normal house temperature - between 65F and 85F - without having any giant fluctuations on a day to day basis. Be sure to keep breezes away from your budgies, especially at night. Budgie cages should be covered at night so they feel safe and secure, and the cover will help keep them warm, too. "

Your bird got sick from the cold. Never place a parakeet close to any draft. It also could have developed parakeet fever. I am sorry your parakeet died, but if you buy another one, get a warm flannel cover for the cage and keep it out of a draft. Parakeets can live for 20+ years when taken good care of.

Parakeets live for about 10-15 years. We just had one in the vet clinic where I work that is 22!
That said, they are very fragile. Chances are the cold didn't kill her, but there is no way to tell what did.
What was her diet like? They need a balanced diet just like people do and sometimes treated or processed foods don't have proper nutrition.
Birds need sunlight. If it was too dark in your place, that might have something to do with it.
Where was her cage? Drafts kill birds more than cold temps do.
They are very sensitive to chemicals. One of mine died when we had a gas leak in our house. It wasn't bad enough to smell that much, but she was dead. Over heated Teflon, and some cleaners are toxic to birds.
Bad breeding will also kill birds young. So will pet stores. If you got her from a pet store, chances are she was sick when you got her, or was stressed out and dying already. Birds hide all illness, so you probably wouldn't have noticed anything.
Sorry for your loss.

He most likely died from the sudden temperature change, I had a love bird that died the same way (he was also only 10 months old).

Sorry for your loss.

Birds are only small creatures with not a lot of resilience, but it seems unlikely that the chill of one day would have caused its death, especially if the weather warmed up after wards. Don't blame yourself, I keep birds and sadly some do die suddenly for no apparent reason. One minute they are fine, the next.....it happens. It is heart breaking and you do wonder if you could have taken steps to avoid it, but that just adds to the pain of loss.
It was out of your control. Grieve for your pet, but don't wish that you had done anything different, it really was unlikely that the cold day was the reason.

Birds are very suseptical to air quality and temperature. It could have been the cold and then the switch to warm. It could be the dust in the air from starting the heater.

Also, something could be wrong with your heater. If it is gas, oil, coal, or wood, you should have it checked. Maybe the exhaust gasses are leaking.

Birds never show they are ill until it is to late. Birds can not tolerate drastic temperature changes or drafts. I would say that it would have had to of been the temperature change that your bird died.

It is quite costly and dangerous to spay a bird. It is a very delicate operation that requires an experienced avian vet. My friend had a ringneck that was spayed to save her life because of egg laying. . The bill was well over $1000. I hardly think a pet shop would spay a $20 keet.
