Ambalika was the daughter of King of Kashi and the wife of Vichitravirya, King of Hastinapur.
Along with her sisters Amba and Ambika, she was taken by force by Bhishma from their Swayamvara. (Bhishma challenged the assembled kings and princes and defeated them.) He presented them to Satyavati for marriage to Vichitravirya.
After Vichitravirya's death, his mother Satyavati sent for her first born, Rishi Veda Vyasa. According to his mother's wishes, he visited both the wives of Vichitravirya to grant them a son. Ambalika was instructed by Satyavati to keep her eyes open lest she would bear a blind son like Ambika (Dhritarashtra). She did keep her eyes open but she became pale after seeing the formidable form of the Sage. Hence her son, Pandu the father of the Pandavas, was born pale.

king of kashi had three daughters amba, ambika and ambalika.
The king arranged for Swayamvara for the daughters. Amba had loved one king whom she had decided to garland during the swayamvara. He was also on love with her. Bhishma went to that swayamvara and forcibly abducted all the three girls to get them married to his brothers chitrangada and vichitra veerya born of queen matsya gandhi and King Santanu.
The assembled princes got angry and started chasing Bhishma who defeated them in the battle.Amba's lover was also among the defeated. she told Bhishma of her love and asked him to release her to marry her lover. Bhishma released her and carried ambika and ambalika to Hastinapur and got them married to chitrangada and vichitra veerya. Story of Amba is told else where
