Every post including the one your at has an ACS (Army Community Service) you can get Germany welcome packets there that will tell you expected expenses, average cost of housing and utilities, phones, weekend getaway places and stuff like that, the packets are quite good. If your not near an Army base the Air Force should have something similiar.
P.S. Spent 9 years in Germany, loved every minute of it!

If you have to live off base, watch out, they will charge you more rent then they would a German and offer less. The ideal situation would be base housing. When we were stationed in Germany the dollar was 4 DM, today it has so depreciated against the Euro, that your purchasing power has decreased and you be better off to buy everything in the PX or Commissary. Be very careful, don't go to areas you don't know alone, it could be dangerous. There is a strong Anti- American Sentiment brewing once again. Be careful who you trust. I read the German Papers daily, so I am informed. Good Luck.

My niece was just stationed in Germany in June and she is having a blast. She's traveling around Europe on the weekends and really enjoying the European experience. You will not be the only newbie, so you will not be alone. Enjoy this wonderful opportunity you've been given.

My friend was there for 3 years and she loved it. I used to get postcards from her from everywhere. Take advantage of all of the trips you can go on. It makes the time fly by and you get the chance to see the world.
