well, first of all, jws or mormons are not esoteric cults. they are minor religious groups that some people call sects, the knowledge they inpart not being closed to common people.
on the other hand, an esoteric group is one that considers that there is certain kind of higher knowledge (that they possess, of course) which cannot be provided to all people, but only to those who have passed through a process of initiation.
some of the esoteric groups include gnosticism, theosophy, some groups that call themselves methaphisical, the fourth way, and (i think) groups which are said to belong to the left-hand path such as the chaos magic and the like.
