How about taking him out to dinner just the two of you and to a movie or something and you pay for everything. It would give you both a chance to spend some quality time together and you could pick up the tab and that would be his Christmas present.
You could give him a card explaining what you have in mind and let him pick a date. Maybe, even spend a day together, just hanging out. Hope this helps. Good luck.
