Hello, I am 39 weeks pregnant. I was wondering how many moms didnt dilate until they went into labor? I am fully effaced and soft but the doc. said no luck on dilating. He said that most first time moms dont dilate at all until they start labor, but I have never heard that before. Dont get me wrong I dont want to go into labor until my due date (because its Oct. 30th and I think thats cool) but I was just wondering who didnt dilate at all or just a tiny bit before labor. Also this energy burst thing...yeah I havent experienced it! lol. Well thanks for your help!

With all three of my kids, I didn't dilate past 3 or 4 until after they broke my water. I have heard of that, and each mother is different, as is each pregnancy.

I had the energy burst thing with my first one, but not the other two. So if it doesn't show up, don't be concerned.

And as for the answer about having sex -- if your doctor has advised against it, don't. That it will start your labor is an old wives tale.

You might end up getting induced if you aren't dilated yet or you could dilate at the last minute, me I was 2cm dilated for about a month with my first baby this pregnancy I hope goes the same as my first cause I was 2 cm dilated for a while but when I was at home my water broke but I didn't have bad contraction until a while after already being in the hospital about 6 cm, I think it went great and hope this one does.

I didn't begin to dilate until 50 hours into labor with my first. Then I went from 0-10 in about four hours. I have no idea with any of my others -- we didn't check dilation because it really means nothing and all it did was make me frustrated and depressed with my first, which I think stalled it even more. I don't need that in labor!

Okay, I'll just tell you about "my" experience, okay? I had never had a baby before, and nothing I read really prepared me for this experience. Everyday of my pregnancy, I walked about 2 miles. One day I woke up, and I felt like I had to go potty, but nothing happened, so I took my usuall 2 mile walk. "That" didn't help, so I
took a couple of laxatives for pregnant women, and waited. "That" didn't help, and my back was starting to hurt a little, so I took a warm bath. "That" seem to make it worse, so I got out and got dressed. Soon, it felt like I was constipated, but in the front instead of the back! So I called my sister-in-law and told her how I was feeling. Suddenly she yells out, "oh my God!" Get to the hospital! You're not constipated stupid, you're in labor!
So I called my husband at work, (a mile away, thank God) and he brought me to the emergency room. I had my daughter 20 minutes later, and went home the very next day. That lovely experience was almost 32 years ago. Whew! And "what" an experience it was! P.S. By the way? That energy burst didn't come untill 3 days after I had my daughter, but every woman is different. As for sex, I stopped on my 8th month just because it wasn't comfortable. Good luck, and God bless.

Well your Dr. is right hun, with my first i didn't dialate until i went into labor, and i had to be induced. Even then my cervix wouldn't give that last tiny bit, and the Dr had to move it himself, to get her out! Even with an epideral, OUCH!!!! poor little thing had a cone head for the first day because of it. But they tell me, i don't remeber it after 18 hours of labor, lol, that once he did that she literally flew out and the Dr said "It's a good thing i played football in college" LOL oh well she was fine and so am i so all is well now. We have two more now, and i was dialated to a 2 for the last three months of my second, but had to be induced early with our third. Every pregnancy is totally differnt! that's for sure!

My water broke at 36 weeks, I never dilated past a 2 and ended up having a c-section. Not saying that to scare you, it was just my personal experience. Maybe once you are induced, things will start rolling.....good luck!!

Would you take advice from a male who was present at both son's births and remembers them well? My wife didn't dilate until she was in laber with the first. Second time was quicker. It's all about being as relaxed as you can be and letting nature take its course. If you are nervous and uptight it will affect your child's birth. Practice your relaxation techniques. Good Luck and Congratulations!

I was induced as well, and was barely dialated before that. Once they started the pitocin, I went from 1cm to 8cm in a couple of hours. The doc was amazed, and didn't believe it was my first child. So, yes, you can not be dialated at all prior to labor and/or induction.

Have lots of sex.
Semen can help to ripen your cervix.
Orgasm can cause contractions.
Good luck!
