You'll get alot of Van Goghs and other impressionists for answers to your question because they are very famous artists but my fave is an American (well-known but not as famous as the others) nam of Milton Avery. Check out his work and you will see some of the best compositional art ever and he invented ways to apply his paint. Real art is creative invention and simplified beauty. "Less is more",someone once said, and I think Avery's work is the best example of real art. I never get tired of it.

Vincent Van Gogh and I'm not the only one, with Starry Night and Les Irises as a few of his most popular. The below link is all you need to see why. It's just beautiful!

Domenicos Theotokopoulos, 1541-1614, called "El Greco".
Most of his paintings are religious in nature and the coloring on them is distinctive. His museum in Toledo, Spain has many wonderful paintings and the Art Institute ofChicago also has several good examples of his works.

Georgia O'Keeffe is one of my favorite American artists.

My answer would be a toss up between my two favorite abstract painters. Each has a very dictinctive style. First choice would be Marti Garaughty, the second would be Jean Claude Gaugy, I'm including a link to both of their websites if you want to take a peek.

One of my favourites is Frida Kahlo. A bit self-obsessed but I get the feeling she paints her dreams, abstract ideas expressed in symbolism and surrealism. A strong woman in her time with great expressiveness in her art.

I love Rembrant and Van Gogh. Both have a really great use of light and dark.
