My dog has no fever, it seems just a virus, tummy bug. Has had diarrhea 4 days now. The vet suggested putting her on bland diet, which I've done, and she's had 2 feedings so far, but she's not back to normal yet. I cooked for her rice, poached chicken breast, hard-boiled egg. Likes it and is eating well. I saw on another forum to give her canned pumpkin? or nonfat vanilla yoghurt? There is an anti-diarrheal paste to buy from the vet but I wanted to try to fix her up at home. Do you have experience with this? Thanks.

Trying giving him a little canned pumpkin, but not pumpkin pie filling. It worked for my dog.

Yes, I have plenty of experience with the afore-mentioned problem. I am a dog breeder & own 13 dogs so we occassionally run into the diarrhea problem. I am also a vet-assistant.

You can give you dog anti-diarrhea medicine you find from the store; or you can buy the paste or a liquid from your vet (it all has the same active ingredient). I prefer to use the pills for larger dogs and the liquid Immodium for the smaller breeds.

For small dogs such as poodles, etc. give only 1/2 pill; medium dogs like cockers (which is what I have) get a whole pill as adults and 1/4 pill as pups up to 10 pounds if that doesn't help I increase the doseage to 1/2 pill for the pups.

For large breeds such as my Rotties and my German Shepherds I just give a whole pill.

Also diarrhea can be caused by intestinal parasites so you may want to have your vet check a stool sample or you can do a routine (which my vet recommends doing every so often anyways with Pyrantel Pomoate). You can get it from Walmart, any grocery store, farm supply store; etc. It is manufauctured under names such as Nemex, Evict, Happy Jack, etc. Just look for Pyrantel Pomoate in the active ingredient for roundworms. If you aren't sure what type of worms your dog may have go with the Safeguard because it gets Tapeworms, Whipworms, Hookworms, and Roundworms.

As a breeder I also know that the pumpkin can very well LOOSEN stools as well as harden them up. If a dog is constipated it will cause them to have mushy stools; if the dog has "pudding poop; large piled up mush" the pumpkin will firm them up but not by much. The bland diet doesn't help if it is intestinal parasites.

Hope this helps.

can pumpkin is usually used to soften stool. I would NOT recommend this in this situation. I would feed white rice, potato, yogurt. It may take more than 2 feedings to ease the diarrhea. Did your vet check a stool for intestinal parasites? If so and it was negative then it may take a anit-diarrheal med. from your vet to help

My dog had the same thing not to long ago, and I called the vet to ask what I was supposed to do for him and she told me to give him a 1/2 teaspoon of Keopectate and it worked, he did not have any more problems after that. Hope that helps out some.

There are several remedies for your problem. If I have a dog with this problem,I usually take away all food and water and give it the baby pediolyte non flavored til stool checks up,this will keep your pet from dehydrating, also kopectate, pepto bismol is good. For other remedies on household meds for pets go to the following site.

You may also need to deworm your pet,as this can cause diarrhea also.

Our dog is on antibiotics for a nasty bout of pneumonia he picked up in animal control. The pills were making his poo a bit soft, and our vet recommended plain or vanilla yogurt, as well.

Just keep doing what you're doing, and if it doesn't start to firm up in a couple of days, call the vet.

Mashed potatoes is the best. And also you can give her alittle bit of Gatorade (sports drink) in her water for minerals and energy and will help to keep her hydrated.

Feed her a good mash twice a day and even add some veggies if you like.

Sounds like your dog has a parasite. You may want to get that checked....
