why and what flavor?

They're both very good, so I think it comes down to which company makes the flavor(s) you like to eat.
Somebody did mention the Bailey's HD, but that was only a limited edition flavor, and (sadly) I don't think you can buy that anywhere now. (It was great in coffee!) They had another limited edition flavor I really liked as well - something with a thick, swirly ribbon of something good! - but I don't remember which one that was. I'd grab it in a heartbeat if I saw it in the freezer, but I don't think that's coming back, either.
Ben & Jerry's best flavors - New York Super Fudge Chunk, Half-Baked, and my personal favorite (also mentioned before), Coffee Heath Bar Crunch - are part of their regular lineup and are commonly available. Gotta give the edge to Ben & Jerry's!
I've also been buying some tasty gelato from Ciao Bella lately - raspberry, lemon, vanilla, dulce de leche (which was warmly received scooped onto slices of homemade apple tart!) and chocolate hazelnut.
I've also coughed up an embarrassing amount of money on Capogiro orange cardamom gelato - I nearly cried when I found out how much that pint cost the first time I bought one, but it was so good that I went back and bought another a few weeks later!

Ben and Jerry's run a great company and have some excellent flavors. However, my all time favorite is Haagen Dazs Coffee.

Haagen Dazs is better, but has more fat. Their Vanilla Swiss almond is creamy and crunchy and has superb chocolate. B&J has more diverse flavors and I feel a LITTLE less guilty eating it. That's a tough call. To be truthful, I wouldn't turn either one down, so please give me a double scoop, one of each. Now the dellima becomes, which scoop on top?! ;o)

ponder ponder... Haagen Dazs? It has this new tiramisu with carmel just out... and Haagen Dazs is more widely available??
But I do love chocolate cookie dough!

haagen dazs, i never tried ben and jerry's. everyo ne of their flavors has at least one ingredient i hate. It usually sounds real good, but then they push it a little too far.

Ben and Jerry's!!! I love every flavour especially "phish food" and " half-baked"!!!! They have the most delicious ice-cream!!! ( I don't really like Haagen Dazs at all )

ben and jerry's half baked vs haagen dazs cookies and cream...it'd be a tough choice so i guess i'll have to do extensive taste tests!
