Immediate solution:
You need two softwares to be able to do it easily. first is
Free RegScrubXP registry cleaner
http://www.sofotex.com/RegScrubXP-download_L7528.html
downlod + install + run it.
When you get in the software window.
Click on user defined problems button.
It will display all entries in windows registry under different categories. So scroll down the list till you reach a category company. In this category look at the names in full key, and Main key. If you locate the name there, then check the box in front of its entry and press the button Fix selected entries.
It should remove the entry from the registry.
After that you will need another software to remove other files created by the program on your computer. It is ccleaner, if you do not have it already read how to use it and then download it from here

Long term solution:
create your own internet security suite

well yeah you can run virus scans on your computer, but by what you said that does not help which sometimes it normally doesn't. I suggest you do before your dad finds out is just reformatting the whole thing. Reinstall XP or what ever you have onto your laptop and by doing that it will make everything just like new again. Also, make sure you install all the applications that you had on it as well. This will help remove the virus you have on it.

Your best bet would be to download a trial edition of Nod32, which is more effective at detecting/removing viruses than the major virus killers. I've seen it many times before when someone has a PC with a major virus killer on it, they then load Nod32 and it suddenly detects all these viruses which the major virus killer didn't pick up.

This may be a little late, but if you have a virus protection software program, update it immediately and do a complete scan. Also,it may not be a virus. It may be Spyware. If you can get to Microsoft, they may have an anti-spyware download.if you get it fixed,Get a good anti-virus program,a Firewall program, and anti-Spyware and QUIT USING THE EXPLORER BROWSER! Go to Mozilla and download the Firefox browser.I quit using Explorer a couple of years ago and I have been trouble free.
You might be able to find a repair shop that can clean it without losing your files.Good Luck!

This is more effective in safe mode (F8 during the boot, pick safe mode with networking)
Go to Start>Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall what you can there. If they won't uninstall, you will get them later.
http://houscall.trendmicro.com
Do the free scan
Download AdAware and SpyBOT (available at http://download.com )
Install, update, scan and remove anything they find.
Update and run your virus scanner http://free.grissoft.com if you need one.
Defrag the drive, reboot in normal mode and rescan to make sure you got it all.
Download and install all Windows updates when you are done. (Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows Updates)
