Multitask-er.

He/she is more than one who sits and operates controls until the train reaches destination. They are, in addition and in a fashion, mechanics, electricians, carmen, laborers and trained observers.

Of course the primary function is to operate the train. But, to do so, one must have an intimate knowledge of the mechanical systems on locomotives and how they operate, which differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, the electrical systems, the air brake systems on locomotives and rolling stock, train handling guidelines and techniques, the territory over which the train is operating, operating rules, safety rules, radio rules, FRA requirements and company directives. At outlying points they must know how to service the equipment in their charge and be able to troubleshoot and correct problems as they occur.

Of course there is the requisite schooling, and the time involved, necessary to accomplish these tasks, which requires good reading and comprehension skills.

They are responsible for the safe operation of the train, so as to avoid damage to equipment and lading, as well as the safety of those working on, under, near or around the train and that of the general public as well.

Duties include daily inspection of locomotives and reporting of defects found during inspections or on trips, close observation of signals, guages, train, speed restrictions or track defects.

And, part diplomat and instructor. These usually involve interaction with the public, with the latter including trainees and co-workers.

Tragically, they are all too often executioners. Not as a result of desire, but because some member of the public either voluntarily put themselves in the train's path due to ignorance or foolishness, or in an attempt to end their lives. Almost always 99.99% preventable.

That, is a locomotive engineer.
