Sun StarOffice is an suite of office applications that are supposed to include all of the benefits of OpenOffice, but in a more user-friendly way. Really, it's just "prettier".
Google has also entered the word processor market, but their application isn't one that you install. It's a web based word processor. It's not as functional as Word, but it does provide a lot of the most commonly used features -- and your documents will be available anywhere you've got an internet connection and a modern browser. It's a swell idea, and it's a pretty reliable service.
Here's an eWeek article about Microsoft Office 2003 vs. OpenOffice:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1571626,00.asp
Here's a PDF file comparing and contrasting the previous versions of OpenOffice and StarOffice:

Good luck in your search!

Open Office is free, as are the tutorials. You can download the entire suite or just the programs you need.
