Absolutely.

The problem is so many people think someone else should be "nice first". It's like dealing with a bunch of 3 year olds.

If you don't give respect and aren't polite, then you don't deserve it get respect or be treated politely.

Now, if you're polite and respectful and someone behaves badly back...then I think you're more than entitled to point out to them just what a jerk they are.

Why would you let others dictate your behaviour?

I believe in behaving in a way that will never make me feel ashamed. I do not worry about others. If someone is a jerk, that is their problem but it won't stop me from being who I am, which is basically a nice person.
Unpleasant people do not bother me, because I am the only one in control of my actions or reactions.
It is not an effort for me to be kind to others, or be helpful if needed. If someone declines or tells me to f*** off (which has never happened) I would just shrug my shoulders and be on my way.

You have to determine who you are. If it is an effort for you to be pleasant, then just be who you are. Don't let others get you down, that gives other people power over you!!

Be nice or be nasty, just be true to you.

I can say without doubt there is a point in being nice to people in the world today. In my experience, when I exude this behavior is when I am the most happy. Also, remember that whatever the result of your nice action is, is not up to you, so never blame yourself. Yet it may be good to observe the result so you may adapt the exact way you supply your nice action.

You can always make your "point" by being nice...especially the more rare the act becomes. I like to believe in the "pay it forward" philosophy where a random act of kindness may just rub off and turn into a huge act of kindness. Why is it we can't seem to figure out how to be instinctively nice as opposed to being rude?

Yes, if you believe in karma, the butterfly effect, the golden rule, and paying it forward. Yes, there are many a--holes in the world but there are plenty other people who extend common courtesy or go out of their way to help others. Don't allow the negativity of others put a damper on your own positive energy. But don't let yourself be a sucker either.

It takes a lot more energy to be nasty than to be nice, so if we are to save energy, then I guess you are better off being nice...

By being nasty, you are triggering bad chemicals from your brain which go all through your bloodstream wreaking havoc on your body; therefore, instead of being nasty to the person you may have inferred an insult you are truly hurting yourself.

Be smart, take care of your body by being nice. It triggers good chemicals, happy chemicals throughout your whole body. Like giving yourself a self induced "orgasm". jejejejeje

"Be happy"...

Of course there is. First, you should treat people the way you would like to be treated; Second, it feels better to be more pleasant than to be rude and mean; You'll look better when you are polite to people versus when people are nasty , they look ugly. Your blood pressure also rises when you're upset, which isn't very healthy. You should not walk around in life letting people ruffle your feathers so much. No one should be able to steal your joy so easy.

Sometimes I don't see the point. I feel like every time I do something nice for someone, they walk all over me. It's definitely deterring.

I would say being nice and respectful of each other completely, no matter...where...how...and who you are or where you live, is needed more in today's world then any other time
