5 weeks ago I started a healthy eating and exercise plan to shape up for Christmas. I am trying to stick to 1200 cals per day. I don't count the calories obsessively but I know what I should and shouldn't be eating. I am not depriving myself of the odd square of chocolate and I am eating small and regular meals. Each week I am running outside for 40 mins (twice), doing a 1 hour weight training class (twice) and a 1 hour spin class at the gym (once). I must be doing something right as I am definitely losing inches as my tight jeans are no longer tight. However the scales are only showing a 4 lb loss and this is getting me down. I want to lose another stone but am finding the slow weight loss really depressing. Would really appreciate any ideas to speed things up!!

Hi Char,
firstly you are doing so much better than you think you are. Fat weighs much less than muscle. You losing fat and toning muscle ( very healthy) Try putting your scales away for two weeks at a time. Keep doing what you are doing. Drink four litres of water a day, cut caffeine and any diet drinks. The water helps believe me. You will have regular trips to the toilet for the first two weeks then your body acclimatises. You are doing so very well. Do not be put off by the scales.

try to avoid the scales as much as possible. Trying so hard and for quite a while yet not seeing the scales decrease much will get you depreste and unmotivated. Youll probubly drop out on the diet plan all togehter and itll be harder to start up once again. belive me ive been there and done that. Now what i try to do is weigh myself as little as possible like once a week and i dont let it get me down to keep going. What works best is to pull out all the clothes that didnt fit right before or ones you wore before you gained weight. Like your jeans that are now loose, i often try on my prom dress from a few years back. Try them on as often as you like and model in front of the mirror. Seeing the progress and how much better you look in the mirror will be the perfect motivation to look stick to your diet and fitness plan. Because the progress that you can see on your body matters most rather than what scales say. If you loose ten pounds on the scales but really lost all water and muscle weigh, what good will it do? The scales say you lost ten pounds but you body isnt any healtier. So dont get down, keep up the good work. Remember its the inches we want to loose and get more toned rather than the numbers on the scales. Thatll come along with time. Muscles do weight more and thats something we want to gain. So if you lost inches and little pounds you should be proud of yourself, that only says that you lost fat and replaced it with muscle. Keep it up in no time the pounds will seem to melt off and youll be healtier. dont try crash diets to speed things up, itll only backfire and youre more likely to gain the wiegth back and more. "slow and steady wins the race" remember that. Good luck!

Most likely you are losing fat, but in the process building muscle mass. Since muscle weighs more than fat and is much more compact, you're staying the same weight but losing inches. It's nothing to work about. But if you're still concerned, lighten your weights and work on toning, rather than weight lifting. Resistance bands are great for toning as well and give you sexier lean muscles. Keep up the good work!

hey you are the first person i ever heard about complaining while loosing inches.
the scale shouldn't even matter to you coz, ur goal is to look good and i'm sure when you are loosing inches, that should be it.
but i'm also concern about the calories you are taking, they are way to low, it will harm your appetizer afterward. so don't do that, change your habbit, and target at least 1800-2000 calories( for that you can add more protein cals instead of carbs), and also if you are eating a lot of fruits, decrease them and add some xtra vegies in your diet. brocolli and spinach are the best to start, avoid carrots, corn and peas for the momment( this should change the numbers on your scale, if not check with your doc.)
tc
and no sodas not even diet....

Hang in there and don't despair, as you get fit muscle weighs more than fat and if you are losing inches that is great. Don't concentrate so much on the number on the scale. It's only a number the smaller and more fit you is the ultimate goal.

As other respondants have put muscle weighs more than fat. I'd up your calorie intake though, as 1200 is not much considering you exercise 5 days a week.

Do not worry so much about the scale, as long as you are losing inches that is what is most important.
Muscle weighs 3 times as much as fat, so you are obviously gaining muscle as well as burning fat.
